I haven’t had this yet, but like you say, the 7yr proof bottle at the price point, can’t be beat from what I’ve heard.
-
Do you know how this compares to the taste of standard Knob Creek. I like Knob Creek and enjoy sipping on it. I know they are made by the same company and have the same mash bill. Knob Creek is $35 a bottle here in Ohio and Jim Beam 7 is only $27 a bottle.

ssandy_561, Knob Creek has a higher proof point with more time in the barrel. With that in mind taking into consideration cost, the new black is a great value bourbon right up there with Knob Creek.

Bourbon has become a new hobby of mine. I recently finished my first bottle of Old Forester 1910 and really liked it. I am going to try a different double-oaked soon but wanted to try something with a higher proof first. I landed on Knob Creek 9 Year Single Barrel Reserve. Just opened the bottle and really enjoyed my first pour. I was concerned that the 120 proof would be overwhelming, but it wasn't. I was surprised at how flavorful it was. I was actually able to start picking up some of the notes that I hear and read about. Gonna like this new hobby.

I figure this is the best place to ask. Over the past year I’ve been buying and enjoying Bourbon. Over the past year I’ve gotten a few bottles of rye that I’ve enjoyed also. I’ve gotten Knob Creek 7 yr rye, Sazarac Rye (which is great in an Old Fashioned), A store pick Knob Creek single barrel rye and my latest acquisition is a Bulleit 12 year rye (I have yet to sample this).
What would be some of your suggestions for additional ryes for me to try. In not trying to break the bank on my picks but anything $60 or less I’ll be up for trying.
My normal routine is picking up a bottle of bourbon on payday when I get paid every two weeks. I’m thinking over the next 3 months I’ll go for ryes on payday, so I’m looking to get 6 bottles of rye over the next 12 weeks.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Do you like a high proof bourbon? If so, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye is a favorite of many on this board. And, right at your price point, maybe a tad above. Another right at the $60 price, Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye.
Some lower priced bottles - Old Forester Rye is pretty good and a budget buy (one I use for OFs as well as sip on). Old Grandad 114 is another bottle I enjoy. As is Wild Turkey 101. These three bottles should be $30 or less.

And if you like finished rye whiskeys - Angels Envy Rye is finished in Caribbean Rum Casks - it has a different profile, but it’s pretty good. Another finished rye bottle is Barrel Seagrass Rye, a blend of American/Canadian rye and finished in three different types of barrels. However, both are above the $60 price point, probably $20-30 above, so may not be what you are looking for.
These are both good, but I like these more as an after dinner sip/dessert drink.

Pikesville Rye is the best of the bunch...some other solid ryes, in no particular order... WT101, Woodford Reserve Old Overholt BiB and 114, Bulleit, JD Bonded, any of the Knob Creeks, Elijah Craig. Dickel Rye is good if you like the distinctive "Flintstones Vitamin" flavor.

Actually, Alan Brice , I use sake or vodka to quick-rinse shrimp or salmon that has been thawed from frozen to get rid of any fishy smell.

Started my journey down Rye street with Bulleit 12 year rye and it’s pretty tasty.
This past year I’ve gotten better and better picking up notes on the nose and on the palate (Look I’m getting all fancy now).
The nose on this confused me for a while though. I got the normal pine, citrus (mainly orange) and some cedar on first take but there was something else. After a few more whiffs and after a few sips, I swear I smell bubble gum.
The taste starts sweet with vanilla and caramel, then moves to citrus and pepper then ends a bit musty and dry in a good way. I think I’ve heard people call this note “dusty”
At 92 proof it is quite smooth but also has more burn to it than anything else I’ve had under 100 proof.
All in all I find it quite enjoyable and am looking forward to sipping on it again.

That’s excellent you are picking up on the notes. I’m horrible at that! I always ask my wife to nose the bourbon and tell me what I smell
And I do hear some say bubble gum at times, so not off on that. Do you have a bourbon tasting wheel? There are a number out on the interwebs, but fun to have that around when tasting new bottles.
And that spice or heat, that’s the rye coming out, at least that’s what I think with rye.

barelfly and @ BBryans3 The peat is crazy, even for an Islay Whiskey Whore like me and I tame it with a splash. This is more of a "last pour of the night because my palate is already wrecked" kind of thing.....My mouth still tasted like a campfire the next morning..

Happy fRYEday. Dueling Ohio ryes tonight.
It’s been a while since I could sit and enjoy a pour or two. Been busy for the past 2 weekends. Continuing on my summer of Rye, I’ve acquired these two bottles over the past couple of week. I’ve tried both of these companies bourbons earlier this year so I thought I’d give their ryes a try. Both smell like your standard rye whiskey. Peppery, minty and spices. This is where the similarities end.
The Middle West is good, there is nothing off putting about it but there is also nothing special about it. There is a bit of heat for only being 96 proof. This will be a delicious rye to make an old fashioned with.
Now on the other hand the Tom’s Foolery rye is next level.
It’s been aged 8 years and had some other fancy stuff done to it. All that means to me is it’s delicious. It’s got all the notes of a great rye, it starts off sweet like honey and then turns spicy with notes of clove and cinnamon and finishes earthy and minty. The whole time is very smooth. Only being 90 proof helps with the smoothness but I believe the age does also.
The Bourbon and Applejack I’ve gotten from this company have also been unique and delicious. Looking at what they make, I know I need to go hunting for the bourbon they finish in their bourbon barrels that maple syrup has been aged in. There is something I really enjoy about bourbon and maple syrup. I also need to find a barrel proof bourbon from them.
Looking at their website, it appears that they have a few open houses a year at their distillery. I’m gonna have to make it to their next one.
