They're actually not too hard to find in the Baltimore Metro area. I bought a couple bottles, from separate releases, but have only cracked one. I have a case of the the regular JDSBBP whiskey, picks, squirreled away because it's so damn good & my favorite liquor store priced their picks $5.00 less than MSRP. I probably should've bought more, but I have more barrel-proofers than I can realistically drink in my lifetime!

Skinsfan1311 I had decided this week, that life is short, and I really should consider JDSBBP should be an every week, if not multiple times enjoyed pour. It’s just so damn good, and the Rye, well.
I’m a high proof rye guy right now, but cask strength is my thing regardless, and JD nails it!

Doesn’t pouring Bourbon in that glass spoil it? 😆

Stopped at the Liquor Store after work to pick up a bottle of Ohio Bourbon. And lo and behold there was a few bottles of this on the counter so I grabbed one.
Can’t beat MSRP of $25.99 for Weller. Took a little taste and it reminded me of Buffalo Trace a bit. I’ll explore this more on a different night.
Now for the real reason I went to the liquor store. I’ve been wanting to try this for a while.
It’s produced in, aged and bottled in Columbus Ohio. The part of it being aged in Apple Brandy barrels intrigued me. It does have a nice subtle background of Apple. I enjoyed it. After finishing my first pour from the bottle I had an A-ha moment. What do I love with apples? That would be maple syrup. So I went big and poured equal amounts of the below into my glass and am sitting here now enjoying it.
You might notice the glass has almost runith over but after working 56 hours this week at my job a heavy pour was well deserved.

I bought a btl of the Smoked Maple for a desert that called for it. A tad forward on the maple.

Alan Brice a "tad" maple forward? You can pour it over pancakes😂 My sister and brother in law love the KC Maple. The combo with the Watershed looks interesting.

Alan Brice Skinsfan1311 it is a maple forward Bourbon. I do not drink it neat or on the rocks. I love it in old fashioned, I love using it in my apple crisp and its delicious mixed with cold pressed apple cider with a squeeze of lemon.

How is that, in comparison’s? I’ve yet to see that on a shelf around me.

Richard Chrz - I really like it. Not as high proof as our JDSBBP, but I’ll have to drink it side by side. I don’t take this bottle out often, but perhaps for fRYEday….it’s a side by side

It’s a double fRYEday kind of a day. Since Richard Chrz asked about the comparison, I wanted to see how these were side by side. It’s not really a fair fight, as the JD is 127 proof vs 112 for the WT and that really stands out. The JD has a boom of a flavor that stands out and stays with the finish, where the WT is much more smoother and comparatively seems to taper a bit on the finish. Being that both are barrel proof, the higher proof just stands out in flavor (and you can see it in the color as well) which I can’t really pin point but I do know I prefer high proof bottles for the flavor. But you definitely get the rye spice from both, much more so with JD.
Between the two, WT is smoother over all, but you get the punch and more flavor with the JD. Given the side by side, if I had to choose, I’d take the JD, as it has a fuller flavor that stays with the entire sip. But the WT is good and if you don’t like such a high proof rye, this is a good smooth pour for you!

After these small pours I tried a bit of Woodford Reserve Rye - and…it was almost as if it had a better profile and finish than the WT. so I’ll have to try those side by side at point. Either way, all three are great pours and enjoyable for a sipper!

Good comparisons. I like them both. The WTRB rye has a very distinct lemon flavor, to my palate anyway, as does the WT101 rye. I prefer the JD, but they're both very good.

Purc I'm not a fan of the regular WR, but I love the rye. IMO it's the best whiskey they make. Given the difference in proofs,(90 vs 112) and profiles, the WR & WTRB ryes are tough to compare.
If you can't find the Rare Breed, the WT101 rye is similar, with a little less punch. Both have a wonderful lemon flavor that pairs well with lemon cookies, lemon bars, etc.

We went back to WNY this weekend to visit relatives. I stopped in the liquor store in the town I grew up in. I wanted to get a bottle of Bourbon produced in WNY.
This is what I got based on the suggestion of the owner that was working while I was there.
I’m so glad I took his suggestion. It made from corn grown in WNY that is smoked before it is used to make the bourbon. It also uses cherrywood malt and chocolate malt. It is so nice over ice. There is not a huge smokiness to it but just enough. Also it has some delicious chocolate and oak flavors. Starts off a bit spicy then ends a bit sweet. Can’t wait to try this in an Old Fashioned. Probably use the chocolate bitters I have. Should match with it perfectly.
Also the owner did what all good store owners should do. He got me to buy another bottle of bourbon.
He didn’t need to try too hard to sell me on this one. I did mention to him after he asked me what bourbons I liked so he could suggest something to me and I told him one of my favorite ryes was Knob Creek 7 year. He pointed out to me that they had a store pick rye from Knob Creek. Pretty easy sale for him. It’s 115 proof and has some very interesting notes to it. Not quite sure what they are. I’ll have to do a deep dive into this some other weekend. At 115 proof it’s actually smoother than the normal Knob Creek 7 year Rye that is only 100 proof. This has the spice of a normal rye but has so many other things going on with it. I’m sure this will be delicious in an old fashioned also but I’m not sure I want to mix this with anything.Last edited by ssandy_561; May 5, 2024, 09:18 PM.
