Put these two side by side tonight…and I really couldn’t pick up much of a difference. The proofs are 110, both with 10 oak staves, although the 46 is French Oak. And if anything, I felt as if the 46 had a slightly more noticeable oak flavor. I’ll have to do these side by side again and pour a little more to really see what I pick up on. Either way, both are good and the nice thing, the 46 is always available.

Continuing my adventures into Ohio Bourbon, I picked up a bottle of Tom’s Foolery Ohio Straight Bourbon Whiskey yesterday. I’m am happy I did.
This is from a very small distillery in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. They ferment their whiskey in open casks and double distill their spirit. This is only about 1 hour from me.
First off this does not taste like any bourbon I’ve tried up until this point. It’s not as sweet and has a taste I could not put my finger on (in a good way).
After further investigation, I discovered Tom’s Foolery uses around 60% corn, 20% rye and 20% malted barley in their mash bill. I read that 20% malted barley is a high percentage for bourbon. I’m thinking it’s giving this bourbon a bit of an Irish whiskey feel.
Also I noticed this bottle is a single barrel that was aged for 10 1/2 years and after some more research it was their 188th barrel they ever produced. They have numbered each of their barrels from day one.
And at $44.95 for the bottle I believe I’ve gotten a good deal. I’m going to have to look for another bottle that was distilled at a different time from them to compare the tastes.
They also make Applejack. Probably gonna have to give that a try.

Uncle Nathan "Nearest" Green is the enslaved man who taught the young Jack Daniel how to distill whiskey, using a charcoal filtration method that he used in Africa (for water) before he was captured. His 5th generation offspring are now making the whiskey.

fzxdoc I am familiar with the name, I’ll do some searching. Thank you. I’m also remembering this story now as well! Now I need to find some!
Also, they always get better 100 proof and north!

My wife booked a bourbon tour to 3 distilleries for our anniversary this past week. We went to Rabbit Hole 1st. A fairly new, very modern distillery. Very interesting to see the process. Next was Buffalo Trace, a very old, historic distillery. Eagle Rare was the special of the day- limited to 1 bottle per person @$40.00 (about 1/2 of normal retail) of which each customer is restricted to the one bottle per 90 days. A wristband with a chip in it tied to a scan of your driver’s license keeps track of purchases. Then we went to Bulleit, another new modern distillery. For a tour and tasting.
My wife does not care for bourbon at all, but she did try all of the samples from all three stops. (I finished a few of hers after her tiny sips) All in all a great day! Pictures that follow do not depict what I am drinking at the moment, but will be enjoyed in the near future. Cheers!

I have the very good fortune to be married to a wonderful lady whose family has owned a delicatessen since 1950. Great meats, lottery, beer, pop and ohh my goodness, liquor.
Recently my BIL has alerted me to a btl of Stagg. A hot lil number at 130.2 proof and a very first
for me, btl of Colonel E.H. Taylor barrel proof, uncut n unfiltered. That one rings the bell at 131.1 proof and ohh soo smooth. Both distilled in Frankfort. Tis good to know peeps.

Last evening took my 4th dive into Ohio bourbon.
This was a delicious pour. So flavorful and smooth. 95 proof with a 4 grain mash bill. Great description of the mash bill, sweet yellow corn, soft red winter wheat, dark pumpernickel rye and two-row barley. It started sweet and finished a bit spicy. Hoping to get together with some friends and tour this distillery and a few others in Columbus Ohio this year.

Smokin-It 3D
Weber Kettle with an SNS
Masterbuilt kettle that I call the $30 wonder grill
Bullet by Bull Grills gasser
Anova WiFi sous vide machine
Thermoworks Thermapen and Chef Alarm
Picked up this Elijah Craig Barrel Proof B524 bottle today. At 130 proof, it’s spicy. I added a few ice chips and that opened up the glass so much. Soft and a flavor bomb, which is what I love about these parcel proof bottles! This is one Richard Chrz would like, given his preference for barrel proof bottles as well.
