If it's going to be rye night WhistlePig single barrel is the way to go.

On the note of rye, especially when I don’t have much experience with it. I have this sample pack I picked up in Durango while visiting my daughter earlier this year.

Laws Whiskey House - going with the straight rye bottle. Spicy rye! I don’t drink rye neat, maybe only had it once or twice, but it is my choice for Old Fashioneds.

A nice spicy, full body flavor to this one. A nice way to get introduced to a rye. Will have to find some others when I get out to a restaurant or two.

Bought this instead of my normal Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.

It's damn good, I will be buying it again. $50 at Total Wine, so a bit more than the Woodford.

I love rye whiskey. I like all kinds, spicy, not so spicy, MGP, etc..
If you're not used to rye, I can highly recommend Wild Turkey 101 and, (if you can find it), Pikesville Rye, both are very well-balanced and I think that you will like it neat, (I don't consider either one spicy enough for an Old-Fashioned). The WT101 rye is very approachable, and very good.

I’m a big fan of Michters rye. I like a spicy rye but Michters is smooth as a good bourbon.

barelfly I picked up a WT 101 a week or so ago. I did not get the rye, but what I read, the rye is pretty high in the “non” rye. Enough to consider it a rye in a sense. Which do you use for your Old F’s ?

Richard Chrz - lately, the WT101 Rye is what I’ve been pouring for OFs. Gone through a number of bottles with my buddy coming over often. Prior to that, like Skinsfan1311 mentions, it was Rittenhouse. Both are good. But, I do want to try something that is spicy rye for the OFs. I also have a KC SB that I’ve used for OFs. It’s higher proof, 120 I think that is pretty good as well, but higher priced than what I want to use for mixing. And Michter’s is another I want to try, I like their bottles.

Which whiskey, not just bourbon, is your preferred go to when it comes to barrel / cask strength?

barelfly Glad to hear you like the Makers Mark 46 Cask Strength. My local Total Wine is out until sometime this month, and I look forward to trying it.

Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof and Wild Turkey Rare Breed, rye or whiskey, are my "go-to's", with Old Grandad 114, bringing up the rear...

I enjoy Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (A123) . Knob Creek Single Barrel is also excellent at 120 proof. For ryes WhistlePig has bottled a barrel proof rye , I also enjoy Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye.

Picked up a few bottles the last couple of days and was given one as a gift. Heaven Hill BiB and Jack Daniels SBBP Rye, I love the bourbon SBBP, thought this would be a bottle to give a try on.

And the Old Emmer, that was from my buddy. It’s a wheated bourbon, right at 120 proof. This is a really good pour. It would be fun to do a blind with this and Weller Full Proof. I had the WFP in Kauai a few weeks ago and that’s what it reminds me of. See how this opens up after sitting a bit.

Richard Chrz - I haven’t seen the HH or JD Rye in Albuquerque, so didn’t want to miss an opportunity. HH, they make 1792 as well, which is great. So hoping this is a great bottle as well. I’ll post up a review, thinking the JD Rye gets cracked tonight

barelfly Have you had their general -(hate to call it that) single barrel Rye, and if so, how does it compare to other ryes y0u enjoy?

I've heard good things about the Heaven Hill, can't find it around here.

      It’s FRYEday!!!!!

my first real rye whiskey. This is spicy, but it has a nice flavor profile.

The nose is nice, some sweetness with some of the pepper notes coming out. On the palate, The pepper really comes out, the spice is up front but a smooth finish.

Someone recommend I try this with a small ice cube as well, so I did that with half the pour. It really opened up with this and mellowed the spice a bit but brought out that barrel proof flavor profile I enjoy.

Richard Chrz - I have not had the Single Barrel variety of this, but it is probably good given the proof is lower. It may be similar to what I am drinking with the ice cube. But I’d suggest it if you can find either!

I am a huge fan of the SBBP as well, it is one of the bottles that holds my attention, I am buying the rye next. I did not catch my wife in time today, and she had already purchased the Sazerac

Sazerac is a good bottle, Richard! For the price, you almost can’t beat it! And if you need help finding the JD SBBP Rye, let me know as well.

This is one of the top 3 ryes I've ever had on this earth. Nice score!

All those JDSBBP posts triggered this pour😉

That is a great variety of whiskey there. You have the smokey, sweet and the heat.

      Such a treat!

I’m super impressed four roses, especially their bit better bottles, affordable and good whiskey character notes, or so I think.

Keeping with the barrel proof theme today

14 year is a hell of a great pour for a rusty nail! I just made my wife one on Friday night. But no where near that level of scotch, we used Monkey shoulder,

Richard Chrz I thought about that - after I got the bottle home. It may just end up being sipped, neat. I never opened it last night.

      Back to the Jack😉

Huskee I've tried at least a dozen, or more, JD SBBP, picks and whatever was on the shelf and they're all fantastic. It's the best bang for your buck barrel proofer out there, IMHO of course. That, and the OGD114 is another good one for the $$$

Keeping up with the barrel proof theme today . Seems to fit after that Patriots game, the higher the proof the better .

I have yet to give this year’s barrel proof bottles a try. I’m waiting to get the C batch and then will go with a side by side tasting, along with a private selection bottle I picked up. From what I’ve heard, the C batch is really good! It’s available out your way, hasn’t made it’s way west yet.

I didn’t snap a photo tonight, but picked up a readily available bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye - Huskee has talked about this bottle for a few years as one of his favorites. it’s also been mentioned above in some of the questions about bottles of rye.

and it’s a good pour as well! Has the pepper spice, smooth. It’s not as hot as the JD SBBS Rye bottle, I’ll have to do a side by side comparison this weekend and see what I think then. But, these rye bottles ha. I’ve been missing out!

I am new to the rye community as well. Nice switch back. WTRBR on my radar. Have not seen it in these parts.

      Battle of the Ryes!

Not double blind, but I did blind taste these and they stood out immediately. I’ll have to do blinds that are similar in proof next time, but I wanted a side by side more than anything. I like both, the JD SBBP Rye has a bit more flavor and punch, of course. But the WTRB is really good! Smoother with the lower proof and a great pickup. I also did these with no ice chip and I’ve learned just in the short time that I like a small ice chip with the ryes. Seems to open them up a bit, and I also like the chill to the pour.

      cheers everyone!
