Decanting - letting it open up a bit, yes, I think it can benefit. As we talked about earlier, the neck pour and opening up a bottle, I think it helps it out. For some high proof bottles, some feel a small drop of water helps open it up as well. So some things you can try if bottles might be a bit hot or needing some rounding off.

The JDSBBP is one of my all-time favorites. It's one of the best barrel-proofers out there & it's very fairly priced. For the quality, it's a bargain. I have several bottles bunkered. This is one that benefits from a large cube and evolves beautifully as the ice melts. I just hope that JD doesn't go the path of Jim Beam, (lookin' squarely at the Booker's), by jacking up the price, (pun fully intended!)

barelfly The KC12 is very good but it's a bit pricey to consider a steal, at least around here. That being said, I'll keep replacing them as long as the cost holds at $65.00. There's a lot of great whiskey available at that price point. The Blade & Bow is pretty good, but not great. I'd buy it on sale. We visited the distillery and it's beautiful and I can highly recommend it.

@Skinsfan - I figure KC12 and RR10, both are underpriced for the age statement. Just based on other bottles you see with similar age statements. Especially RR10.
But thanks for the note on B&B. I’ll wait to buy until I can try it somewhere.

barelfly I'm with you 100% on the RR, but not so much on the KC12, but I'm a Turkey Head. I prefer RR SiB, which doesn't have an age statement, but its believed to be in the 8-10 year range & is much better than the RR10. The SiB cost has crept up but it does go on sale, for ~ $59.00. I suggest that you give it a try. It's a WT product, so you can't go wrong! That being said, if the RRSiB & KC12 were sitting on the shelf at the same price,(and I could only buy one), I'd probably flip a coin.

My bourbon geek friends laugh at me because I like it so much. The snobbier ones tell me it tastes like kerosene. I beg to differ. I love it and really enjoy that oily corn-forward goodness. If you really want it to shine, stick a bottle in the freezer. A teeth-cracking shot of MC really goes down good and scratches an itch that other whiskeys can't. The only thing that I mix it with, is a good, spicy ginger ale. Blenheim's, if you can find it. It used to be $15.00.

I’m just getting into Bourbon. Never really cared for it but that probably was because what was being served to me. Also my tastes have changed.
I just recently bought my first bottle of Bourbon to actually drink rather then cook with. After a little research I chose the standard Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey.
The few glasses I’ve had I’ve enjoyed.
I chose this from reviews I read about a subtle maple flavor with bold and spicy tones because of the rye content.
I know everyone has their preferences for Bourbon but I’d like some suggestions for my next bottle.
Here is the criteria:
1. Under $30 for a fifth. Not ready to break the bank yet since I’m still learning what I like.
2. Easy to find at any liquor store. The only place I have in my city to buy liquor from is a section walled off in our Giant Eagle grocery store. They are clueless here when it comes to advice.
3. Something that is somewhat straightforward. Not looking for something that is totally different than other Bourbons but something that might have little nuances that make it a bit different.
Other brands I’ve thought about buying are:
Buffalo Trace
Eagle Rare
Makers Mark
Four Roses
Knob Creek
Thanks for any suggestions.

I purchased the 1.75 of Four roses. Their entry level, I had a few four roses and Diet Coke last night. That bottle is cheaper than Jack Daniels and Makers Mark, and is every bit as good, at least as my first opening of it. I think I will actually buy a bottle of Jack just for a comparison. But it’s a solid buy.

barelfly I still prefer a good rum, access to it locally is horrible, I will likely start buying some bottles on line.
It’s hard to not find the huge access to variations of bourbon and various other whiskey’s when looking. I feel I’ve stayed pretty close to the major brands so far.

My new Cigar aficionado, interestingly enough on timing, has an article on American Single Malts, and pairing them with cigars.

Richard Chrz partied w/the boys on sat. One very generous fellow brought many "Isla del Sol Maduro". Man! Probably two of the best, smooth smoking, Cigars I have ever tasted!

He has a connection in Kentucky, he drove down and purchased them all. Which now that I know that, I have a connection. Lol!Last edited by Richard Chrz; July 25, 2023, 08:06 PM.

I ended up scoring two bottles, an eagle rare, and a EH Taylor small batch. Thankfully I did not have to purchase either, both were gifted in return for some bbq.

Now that is a deal you should pursue! Tax free and I would venture to guess it taste the best of all! Way to go Richard!

barelfly It drinks hot, even with the melting ice. Next time,I'll just add water, and skip the big cube. For whatever reason, it didn't evolve as nicely as most of the other high-proof whiskeys in the bunker. It's the 2nd time I've tried it and the results are the same. I followed up with a pour of JDSBBP which is higher in proof, but easier on the palate. With a couple small ice chips, the JD opened up beautifully and drank below it's proof. I'm not giving up on the OF, but I hope it improves

I went to my first Total Wine store this morning. I was totally overwhelmed by their selections and friendly staff. I walked out empty handed. I was too early for a tasting. We didn't have these mega liquor stores in TN where I moved from. I'll go back with a shopping list next time.TW was much larger than our local Specs store.
