OK, Kjetil ... so you've brought back ancient memories of "The (Mis)adventures of an American home-brewer new to living in Norway": Back in the late 90's, we moved from the USA to Stavanger. At the time, I was a VERY active home-brewer of beer and, once settled, started searching for the ingredients to continue my hobby. One day, SWMBO and I went searching all over Stavanger for a store that might sell brewing supplies ... and we found nothing. Until. I eventually found a very helpful Norwegian gentlemen working in a store (I don't remember which one) who had some familiarity with home brewing.Originally posted by Elton's BBQ View Post
Fortunately, his English was MUCH better than my Norwegian, and he recommended that we go to a place called "Alcohol Land" (at least that's the way it sounded to me) in the town of Sandnes (just a few km south of Stavanger) to buy what I needed. I remember thinking "Alcohol Land"??? Wow, these Norwegians are some real serious party animals!
In Sandnes, we drove around ... and around ... and around ... and around the warehouse district that contained the address that we had been given. No "Alcohol Land". Nothing even close. Then, after about the tenth loop through the area, I noticed a warehouse with a sign that said "LK Haaland". After about the fifteenth loop, I realized that, in Norwegian, "LK Haaland" would be pronounced something very much like "El" "Caw" "Haw" "Land" ... which to English-speaking ears sounds awfully close to "Alcohol Land".
After another few loops ... and still feeling pretty stupid, I stopped at the LK Haaland warehouse and found what I needed. The results weren't great (it was an amateurish beer kit from the UK) ... but it was (barely) ok. And I kept "Alcohol Land" on my go-to list for the remaining years that we lived there.
