I found a bottle of this the other day. It is pretty good, lots of fruit notes I think. My palate is not good enough to describe a lot of flavors. More like me like, me don’t

Did a blind Irish Whiskey tasting with two friends on Friday Night. We did two sets of three. Each whiskey was originally consumed neat then with a few drops of water using 1/2 oz pours. Our wives did the pours in the kitchen while we were around the corner in the living room.
I happen to love Writer's Tears Irish Whiskey. It is delicious and one of my favorites to sip on in an evening if I'm going to have Irish Whiskey. I found two versions of Writer's Tears. One that what finished in a double oak cask and another that was finished in a Marsala cask. The regular Writer's Tears is 90 proof as was the one finished in a Marsala cask. The double oak was 92 proof. All were good. We all ultimately agreed that the double oak had a more alcohol smell, however, its finish lingered and was really good. Interestingly, as we all scored the whiskeys individually we all liked the regular Writer's Tears the best and the one finished in a Marsala cask second best. We all agreed that we would be happy consuming any of them if they were poured for us.
The second set of three was a Bushmills 21, a Bushmills 16 finished in a sherry wine cask, and a Jameson 18. Again, all were tasty and would recommend. In a blind test we all agreed the Bushmills 16 finished in a sherry cask was our favorite. It had a a nice nutty flavor with a rich finish that lingered in the mouth. The Hameson 18 was really good too, however, it scored a full point on average less than the Bushmills 16. It had a sweet Carmel taste with a hint of nut. Interestingly and shockingly we all agreed that Bushmills 21 was our least favorite. It was good, just not as good as the Bushmills 16, Writer's Tears, or Jameson 18. Also, based on our scoring the Bushmills 16 was our favorite with the regular Writer's Tears tasting the best.
Will say it was really fun to do this blind taste test. We all felt that if we had known what bottle was what we might have changed our vote or they would have been subliminally influenced. We are planning on doing another of these in the future maybe with Ryes or Barrel proof bourbons. Should be fun. Will keep you informed.
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

This one from Old Forester is outstanding. I can't promise a bottle you might find would be the exact same experience as this one, since it's a store pick from a very reputable store in SE Michigan known for their picks, but WOW.
I really enjoy Old Forester a lot and I've even been to their distillery store front in Louisville. Pretty cool place. I've never seen a single barrel. Will have to keep my eyes peeled.

How do you like it? I like some of their whiskey but the only rye that I've had is the standard finished in rum casks and it's so cloyingly sweet that I can't drink it. Same deal with the triple oak..I dumped it out at a recent tasting. That said I have a store pick that I bought on vacation in Florida, back in 2020 that is insanely good. I think it's 108 proof. They let you sample any their picks and this one is so good I bought two. If we hadn't had to fly home, I would've bought a couple more. I'm not a fan of finished whiskey, but the port barrel finish is subtle & doesn't overwhelm the base spirit. This is my last bottle so I drink it sparingly..
I like this AE Rye much better than the rum finished rye. This is a true rye, so you may like this one better, but if you have ryes you like, just stick with those. If you have a chance to try it somewhere, do that to see if you like it.
The AE port, regular or the barrel proof is excellent! I like those and keep them on hand.
I like Ryes too, however, if given the choice of a high-proof bourbon and rye I'll likely go towards the bourbon. Will keep my eyes peeled for the AE Rye. I have a couple of buddies who love rye. I'll check with them too. Thanks for sharing!
