From Whiskey Thief. These are some of the best spirits I have tasted, but they cost a lot per bottle. As you can imagine; if they emptied these barrels the other day, what I got is no longer available. They can get close with the same mash bill and proof, but the barrel characteristics will be different. I was surprised to learn that one of the bourbon rules is that they cannot reuse a barrel. That’s why you see so many other spirits finished in bourbon barrels. They sell the used barrels. Anyway, I got choices B2 and R1 from the board. B2 is on the left.

barelfly We've flown to Kentucky a couple of times, toured a lot of distilleries & before they closed, the Brown Forman cooperage. Between the two of us, we brought back 8-9 bottles packed in Wine Wings,(google it), in our checked luggage. Everywhere we fly, I take a couple Wine Wings..just in case. That's how I brought back some excellent picks from a Florida liquor store.

I forgot a couple. This was hiding in the bag from Jim Beam. I haven’t had it, but I was talking to some guys about my new taste for high rye whiskey, and they recommended it
Also, while I was at Whiskey Thief, they were bragging on this gin that their distiller came up with. I don’t normally drink clear spirits, but I gave it a try and I think it is exceptional gin
From the angle of that pic it looks like I had been indulging myself lol

Sweaty Paul I love New Riff and it's Fan-damn-tastic! I'm slightly biased..I've been drinking NR since the distillery opened and I love most iterations of their whiskey..Last edited by Skinsfan1311; May 21, 2026, 04:43 PM.

Sweaty Paul the High Note will be tough to find. It's a "one of" release that was available for their Whiskey Club members online and had to be picked up at the distillery. It sold out in under 10 minutes. Fortunately a friend of ours lives across the street from New Riff and could pick it up for me. I only see her during football season when she comes to our tailgates. I bought it in May, but didn't get to taste it until September. It was worth the wait!

Sweaty Paul. This is an older, and pricier, version of Old Overholt 100 & 114 rye. The 100 BiB & 114 are both cheap, easy to find & very solid rye whiskey. It's a "Pennsylvania-style" rye, whatever that means. It used to be distilled in PA, but Beam makes it now. It's more rich, fruitier and fuller flavored than the younger versions & it's very good.

barelfly & Sweaty Paul. The Sweet Wheat is good &, (like most 1792), punches a little above its weight. Having said that, it's quite approachable & a great pour for someone who's just getting into whiskey. The EC, however, is fantastic. At 108 proof it's firmly in my wheelhouse & is a much better pour than the standard EC & drinks below its proof almost to the point that its crushable. I may sneak back to the LS & snag a couple more because when it's gone, it's gone...

That’s a good way to describe the Sweet Wheat. I asked because I was curious if I was missing something. It just felt like it had flavor up front and then just fell off, no back end flavor whatsoever. And the mouthfeel was just too light for me. So I was curious if maybe it was just the barrel that my bottle happened to come from. Now…the BiB and Single Barrel 1792…oh my goodness are those some good pours!

Skinsfan1311 I'm a huge fan of the Elijah Craig barrel proofs also. Think it's hard to beat for the money and the availability of it too.
