Never heard of this. What's it like?

Sweaty Paul - it’s great, being a cask strength especially! And if you like a rye, it’s got that great rye spice but nice smoothness from the bourbon. they have a regular proof bottle that is readily available here at least.
But a great blended rye/bourbon bottle if you enjoy this kind of pour.

Went to Niagara Falls this weekend.
Last time I was there, I scored some really good Scotch at a really reasonable price, but it's been a few years since then. It was a 12 year old, cherry casket aged, single malt Scotch.
Was hoping I'd find something the same or similar, and within budget.
I settled for these two at the duty-free store:
I have yet to crack them open, but I'll let you know what I think, when I do.
The other "different" thing I found was, when hunting for good cigars, I noticed the distinct lack of them. In fact, in general, I hardy saw any, which was weird since they were all over about 14 years ago.
Well, apparently the current situation has affected imports. Of the cigars I found, they had some extremely "interesting" labeling. Essentially color pictures of autopsy patients, in all their glory, plastered directly on the packaging, of the various maladies from excessive use. And I mean, Autopsy Photos. Color Autopsy photos. Apparently, that's a "Mandate" now.
I asked my lovely cashier, "So, anyone stopped buying cigars because of the pictures". She laughed, and said "F---- No". I also noticed the lack of American Imports, used to be, you could buy a few bottles of domestic stock cheaper in Canada then in the US. Nope, she said, "It's like two children fighting. Wish they get their heads out of their a---s" and mind their own business".
Cubans? Non-existent, and if they had them, prices start at $300. Cheap cigars were no better than here in the US. So I walked out with the Scotch and a bottle of Jägermeister.
At least the weather was nice, and the Brazilian steak house was good!
Edit: Just checked on the local prices for those bottles. Looks like I saved about $20 each, roughly. Still didn't find the other one I'd bought years ago, but the local liquor store had a $140 bottle of Glenlivet that I think was about $89 up in Niagara. I almost went for it, but liked the idea of trying a couple new bottles instead.Last edited by dpearce; June 3, 2026, 03:44 PM.

When we went to Niagara Falls in 2019, with the exception of some Canadian whiskey, I did not think the prices that great on the alcohol and the Cubans were obscenely priced. I only shopped at the duty-free store next to the bridge. They had those disturbing images on the tobacco products as well.

We were there in 2012 last time. No disturbing images then. The $50 bottle of Glenlevit I brought home was $140 here, but I couldn't find that exact bottle this time. I believe the bottles I brought home this time were about $60 cheaper than here? Next time I get around to the store, I'll check, but they were definitely cheaper. And yeah, the cigar prices have really gone up! I can find decent Maduro's around here for $12-$15 I usually splurge and get one or two $30 ones for the summer.

I smoke too many to be spending $15- $30k for a cigar. I have subscribed to Cigar Aficianado for some years now and have learned a lot about tobacco similar to belonging to the Pit to learn about cooking. There are many good rated cigars that are not Cuban and I have found a few from reading and looking at their ratings. They have done a blind smoke test with a panel of smokers for years now so I trust that the ratings are pretty fair. I go online and bid for good cigars.

cruiseplanner1 Cubans are overrated. Back in the day they may have been special, but not now, especially at the prices they command. Nicaragua & the Dominican make excellent smokes so there's no reason to chase down Cubans....
