The other day I went to my brother in law's for a Scotch tasting evening. He has about 7 kinds of Scotch and a few nice bourbons. I brought a couple Scotches too.

He lined up 7 blind samples for me and I tasted and took notes on each one. I knew what the 7 were I just didn't know what order he placed the samples in, so part of my tasting was to try to guess which was which, then rate them favorite to least favorite.

I thought for sure I could nail my two favorites- Glenmorangie and Auchentoshan.

As you can see from the photo, there were some of the more famous names in the lineup. After all was said and done, this is the order I ended up ranking them 1st-7th; left being most favorite, right being least favorite.

I picked my favorite Glenmorangie Lasanta as #1 (yay me!) and oddly enough Johnny Walker Blue dead last:

So here's how I blindly ranked them:
    1. Glenmorangie Lasanta 12
    2. Hibiki
    3. Highland Park 15
    4. Auchentoshan Three Wood
    5. Glenfiddich 15
    6. Dalwhinnie 15
    7. JWB

What's funny about this is he and 3 other guys had just a few days earlier done a blind Scotch taste test, and they each picked Johnny Walker Blue last. It's good stuff, but there's far better out there, and if you factor in its ridiculous price, it's not that great. I'm not knocking JWB fans, but I will never buy anything over Green Label again, it's great and actually affordable.

Hibiki is awesome too, if you've never had the chance to try it I recommend it.

Here are two others that we tried separate from the first tasting. I did these two blind against only each other.

In the blind test here the clear winner (to me) was Royal Brackla 12. I was surprised at that!

I hate to say it, but the ONLY (and I mean it) the only Scotch here I was turned off by was the Johnny Walker Blue. By comparison to the others it was too peaty, too smoky. I've had it a few times by itself and loved it. Blind taste tests are very eye opening, it removes bias and levels the playing field. But it can also taint things too- having these smooth and some sweet Scotches made me dislike the peaty JWB.

Some bourbons I tried (not blind) were:
    Jefferson's Ocean- did not like.
    Blanton's- Holy cow, incredible!

And an Irish Whisky, Redbreast- It's ok, not my favorite but not bad.

If your BIL is stocking those, you need to visit more often ... great selection. Like the ranking; JW is overrated. Got some Brackla from the Mrs on her last trip to Britain ... not sharing that often.

Huskee Years ago, before the towers went down, I took a wine class at Windows on the World w Kevin Zraly. GREAT class. He was a big proponent of blind tastings so that people would develop what they really liked rather than what they thought they should like. One night after he made all the people who liked a blind taste stand up- about half the class- he announced that he'd just saved them thousands of dollars bc what they liked was Ernest and Julio Gallo.

Keep your scotch...but I'll drink all (and any) of your bourbon!

QPR on Bulliet is the best in the market (IMHO...and my daily drinker)
      I LOVE Blanton's
I LOVE Bakers (107 proof always)
      I LOVE Larceny

I buy the Blanton's every time I can find it. Not much to be found in Dallas area lately...

BBQCentralShow Total agreement! I can't drink scotch anymore and forget about those French brandys - way to refined. And yes Bulliet is my go to cheap bourbon - I've got a store that sells the 1.75 litre bottle for $45 which works out to less than $20 for a regular sized bottle! My all time favorite bourbon is Blanton's. I've never had Larceny so i'll look for it - thanks for the tip.

I tried Bulliet once and didn't care much for it, but most people who mention it like it.

How about Michter's Celebration Sour Mash Whiskey. Saw it on Billions. I think its around $5,000/bottle. Let me know if anyone has ever tried it as it is way out of my league!

Agreed! I cannot believe it is only $30 in my store.

With bourbon you get a lot of bang for your buck with simple choices like Old Granddad 100 Proof BIB, Ancient Age, and JB Black. Old Granddad is probably my favorite with some ice and maybe a little club soda. Esp. when cooking with fire. Straight corn whiskey with a punch.

Scotch is a different story. I like JW Red with club soda, JW Black with ice, and maybe Caol Ila 12, Isle of Skye, White Horse, and Talisker 10 if I really want to celebrate. JW Black is probably my overall fave.

Talisker 57 North. Can't get it in the States though, so pick it up at Duty Free when returning from Europe. Of course, Talisker 10 is a really fine 10 year old. For day-to-day, I usually enjoy Makers or Bushmills.

Toby Keith summed it up best for me: "something with a little more edge and a little more pain."

Wellers Reserve is my current go-to bourbon but there are a lot of good ones out there and always more to try. Lagavulin 16 is probably my favorite scotch (at the moment) I like the 16 year old scotches as they have the best ratio of burn to smoothness, IMHO.

I am a bourbon guy. I keep trying Scotch but the only one I didn't dislike so far is the Glenn Morangie that is aged in Sherry casks. As far a bourbons go, Pappy 12 year is my favorite, yes even over 15 & 20 year old varieties. My go to every day bourbon is Blanton's Single Barrel. That said I keep a table well stocked with a variety from big names to micro distilleries to cater to whatever mood I may be in. Some I drink straight, some I use in cocktails. And of course a good cigar is a fine accompaniment.
