My Sad Story About Beef Lost: Losing A Whole Creekstone Farms Rib Loin

Here's my sad story of beef lost. I hope you enjoy it.

When CreekstoneFarms has their sales I like to stock up, as many of us do with our favorite meats. They recently (and currently with some items) had a sale on full fresh rib loins, and I like these to make prime ribs and steaks.

Mine was delivered this past Wednesday. I like to wet age mine for a month or two before portioning and freezing, but my spare meat & beer fridge has been acting up and not cooling below 43-45F lately, despite defrosting it and cleaning the back coils, so it's fine for beer but not meat.

It's been 20s to upper 30s outside day & night so I put the box, still sealed up, in the back of my truck until my wife could take it to her mom's to put in her spare fridge. I forgot it was in there.

Do you see where this is going? Well, you're wrong, ha! Keep reading.

We do not have trash pickup at our place, we are literally on the wrong side of our road for trash pickup to be included so we have to take our trash to the "transfer facility" (a.k.a. dump). The dump guys are nice and usually help you unload all your trash, sometimes do it all for you.

My wife loaded up the trash in my truck and took it there while I was sleeping days for work. She wasn't thinking clearly and assumed (there's that word, "assume", which will hurt you every time) that the CreekstoneFarms box was the one from last week with nothing but freezer packs we don't need.

Now do you see where this is going? Well, now you're right!

The dump guys tossed my unopened 12-14lb Prime rib loin into the dumpster. Never to be seen again.

This happened Saturday. My wife realized this at 5am yesterday morning and texted me about it. I was at work, it was 5pm to me, but it woke her up from sleep when she realized it. She feels bad and I don't have the heart to be mad at her about it from how bad she feels. To be honest I had forgotten about it too, I thought she had already taken it to her mom's fridge. I'd be a hypocrite if I got mad at her for forgetting it too.

A dozen ribeyes, or a couple prime ribs and some steaks, whatever... $245 of Prime beef, gone.

Ouch. That tale read like fingernails on a chalkboard. It hurt so much that I just wanted it to stop.

OUCH! Sorry to hear that. Oh man....

I can sympathize right now (though not with such a nice chunk of meats) as I lost approx $200 in food due to the tornadoes here because we went 21+ hours without power. I was lucky in 2 ways though - I didn't have a fully stocked fridge nor freezer - I didn't lose my home (it was that close!)

17 years ago we took a direct hit from an f0, the smallest one; it was still incredibly damaging. You were very lucky.

I believe this f3 had lost some of it's potency just as it approached the subdivision. It was said to about 600 yards wide but I was within 100 to 150 yards of it and didn't get damage. I did have everything from metal and roofing tiles to trash and even ears of left-behind corn in my yard. I've had closer calls in Okla and Texas, but it's been a decade or more since I've been this close to one.

Whoa! Glad to hear you're alright. Those things are scary

Sorry to hear, that hurts in many ways. You're not alone. I was rearranging our storage freezer and left the bin that had King Crab Legs and fish filets out sitting on the floor. My wife didn't kill me.

Wow. That is awful and so sorry to hear this.

On the other hand, since it is now Tuesday and the meat has been sitting in the back of the truck, isn’t there a good chance it could have spoiled by now? Also, since you forgot about it too, wouldn’t that also mean it would likely spoil in the weeks and months before you or your wife remember to put it in the freezer?

Maybe this meat was never meant to make it to the plate.

I'd calculated the forecasted temps before putting it in there, so theoretically I'd have been ok. I think. Who really knows. Not my best week.

Oh my. When I fire up my grill tomorrow, I’ll keep my tongs at half staff.

As said above. Only one word can describe this.
              OUCH.
I’m sorry for your loss Aaron.

The lesson learned here is simple: Never let your wives drive your truck!

Got that right. I'm going to Home Depot and buying a dorm fridge before this happens again.

Painful, but I can certainly see myself doing that (other than the fact that its almost never cold enough to leave meat outside here...)
