smokenoob. Was up at Hayden yesterday, water 48 degrees saw 2 caddis and one hopper. Water still too cold up there. No Spring here this year, Unbelievable amounts of wind and cool weather. Now a warm up and that river is going to rip with run off. Heading down to camp at Pueblos Reservoir this week and see if the Arkansas is fishing. Also some great restaurants there. Any plans on a return date?

A book that has challenged me on my apparent paltry and lackadaisical expression of Christian love.

I met the U-boat captain whose boat ended up ashore in Jacksonville Beach back in the late 80's when I was working at a book store that had a book signing for a local author who had written about it.

Like so many others, what else would you be reading right now anyway?

I got inspired by so many of you reading the classics or at least modern classics. Started Steinbeck’s East of Eden. Wow, so good.

This past week or so I have been re-reading the novels by Paulette Jiles, and am currently reading one I discovered I had missed.
Paulette lived alone on a ranch outside San Antonio and was a fabulous author. She died a little over a week ago.
Even if you haven’t read any of her books I think the odds are you have seen the movie with Tom Hanks, “News of the World” based on her novel of the same title.

Here is Texas Monthly’s article on her life.

I saw the movie but I just started reading the book. Love it!
Going to check out more of her books. I live 70 years in San Antonio.

That was a pretty good movie, very underrated IMO.

I didn't know that Paulette Jiles had passed away. Very sad. I've read many of her books. The first one that hooked me was Stormy Weather, read back in the late aughts. I read every new book she wrote after that one. Such an insightful author with a gift for flawlessly depicting unforgettable characters.

I think I'll hunt up a copy of Enemy Women, written in 2002 and read that one.

This one is fascinating! He wrote a similar history on the FBI and a sequel for the CIA history.

I read this and was depressed at how inept, self defeating, and generally terrible our intelligence community was historically. Hard to get through.

Half Bad the follow up book just published was much more positive I felt. We are still not covering ourselves in glory but we are not completely inept as we were in the 50s and 60s.

Figured I’d brush up on a local town’s history. This is an actual journal written in 1880-1881 and verified as factual. I was born 100 years too late!
              The writer is a hoot!

Whenever I am asked this question I always reply with "The Bad Ass Librarians of Timbuktu" which makes me sound smart when in fact I probably just finished another Bernard Cornwell book.
I posted this back in 2018 and it mentions the book “The Bad Ass Librarians of Timbuktu” which documents how librarians smuggled out ancient manuscripts, many dating from the 13th century, when Timbuktu was captured by al-Qaida and they were destroying cultural artifacts and sites to purity the region. The librarians stuffed the manuscripts into rice sacks and used donkeys and other means to carry them to safety. Kathy and I both enjoyed the book.

Yesterday was Kathy’s birthday, and by coincidence on the same day the manuscripts were finally brought back to Timbuktu when the Islamic State was finally ousted after 13 years. She said it was a great birthday present.

The Malian military government has returned home the first batch of the manuscripts of Timbuktu, dating back to the 13th century, that were spirited out of their fabled northern city when it was occupied by al-Qaida-linked militants more than a decade ago.

                    Such a great writer

Currently re-reading Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. One of the best books I've ever read. Next up is Ron Chernow's Mark Twain. Really like his style of writing and am looking forward to getting started with this one.
