Amongst my daily reading and study I just turned a page in this newly acquired book. It is a collection of field journals by a very literate fur trade, explorer, surveyor and map maker, one David Thompson, from 1784 to 1812. He explored western North America. It was compiled by a Jack Nisbet who tried to retrace Thompsons steps. Click image for larger version

This post triggered a bit of research, resulting in ThriftBooks committing to send me a copy. Thank you.

We toured Gettysburg last week. I know that battle well, but I’d never read The Killer Angels, a novelization of the event. So I read that last weekend. It’s pretty good.

Theres been a lot of great history reads recommended over the last year or so. I gotta get crackin’.

My current slog of a read... love Brandon Sanderson and the story is mostly engaging I just struggle with 1st person books.

And my backlog not counting the Kindle is growing rapidly, as it appears everyone I read wanted to drop stuff this year.

Next up is a non-fantasy book from Ken Williams covering the rise and fall of Sierra On-Line. And then all the rest.

Defiant was a slog, but glad that's behind me. The Ken Williams book was good, but some sloppy editing with repeated events a few times through the book. Haven't touched the other 2 yet because I got a HUGE book in, Sandersons Wind and Truth

Loved the book & thought the movie was great. After reading & seeing various interviews with the author I gave a dissertation to a couple of fatherless boys in a hour drive to see the movie. It had a lasting imprint on humility and teamwork. They loved everything by the way.

Mine is “Red Sky at Morning” by Richard Bradford, A novel about growing up in New Mexico during WW2 which I first read in 1968 and reread every few years. Harper Lee called it a work of art, and I would too.

A couple of things from mom. The recession cookbook is a school project from a school she taught at in the 70s; she wrote and published And So I Write but didn't get to publish Follow the Wind.

In 1938 the San Diego Zoo imported 2 giraffes. The giraffes survived a major hurricane at sea and then had to be transported from NYC to San Diego during the Dust Bowl era. As my wife would say, “A good book isn’t about something. It is something.”
This book is something. If you happen to be a Kindle Unlimited subscriber then you can read it for free.

I like science fiction and space operas, fantasy (elves, dragons, wizards, etc.).

Currently on the last book of a 10-book series from author David Weber called the "Safehold" series. Have read his "Honorverse" series of 14 books several times - many spinoff series from this storyline, as well.

Also love the "Legacy of the Aldenata" series from John Ringo (~13 books?), as well as many of his other series - "Black Tide Rising" (9 books or so), "Empire of Man" (4 books), "Council Wars" (4 books), "Paladin of Shadows" (6 books), "Looking Glass Series" (4 books), "Special Circumstances" series (2 books? I thought there were 3....), anything by Anne McCaffrey (Dragonriders of Pern series - 27 books or so?, The Freedom series, Acorna series, Tower and Hive series, Planet Pirates/Dinosaur Planet series, etc.), C.J. Cherryh (The Foreigner series - 21 books and counting, the Chanur novels - 5 books,) and many others.

Big favorite is R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt Do'Urden, a dark elf character in many of his novels - The Icewind Dale Trilogy, The Dark Elf Trilogy, the Legacy of the Drow series, the Paths of Darkness series, The Hunter's Blades Trilogy, the Transitions series, and the Neverwinter Saga. He's a prolific author, and I really love his stuff.

Could go on forever, just about...

It’s the first of a series of three that was recommended buy someone here way earlier in the thread. It took me a while to get to it but so far it’s been really great.

That would be me, and I hope you enjoy the series as much as I did. The stuff on Japanese politics was a bit long for me, but once I got through that, the rest was very interesting. My Dad was in the Navy and served in the Pacific. His ship was hit be a kamikaze, but he never talked about it. CaptainMike made the original recommendation.

I’m reading John Gierach’s most recent and last book, he unfortunately passed away weeks ago. He has written over 20 books on fly fishing, all which i have read over the last 35 years. If you fly fish, start with “Trout Bum” and then read them all, every one is outstanding!

"A Death in Cornwall" Daniel Silva's latest Gabriel Allon story.
I'm also revisiting James Lee Burke's "The Jealous Kind" on audio, for my cardio workouts. Anything read by Will Patton is worth checking out....even if it's just a cookbook!

I am a nonfiction reader, primarily astronomy-related books, but I occasionally venture out beyond that. I am currently reading Being You: A New Science of Consciousness by British neuroscientist Anil Seth.

(It has one of the most gripping opening sentences of a popular science work that I have ever read: "Five years ago, for the third time in my life, I ceased to exist.")
