Great choice. Dr. Verghese was one of my professors in med school/residency, one of the most eloquently spoken people I've ever met. If you get an opportunity to read his ?1st book, IIRC, My Own Country, I was there. I was one of his residents at that time. When it came out, we all picked out who we thought was which character. I can't recall which pages the guys all said I was on/in, I need to pull it out and read again. It was an eye opening time.

acorgihouse that's amazing! I love his writing style and ability to move the story along with connections. I haven't read his first book but it's going on my list of future reads. B

I read this book recently and have been recommending it to my clients (For those of you who don't know, I'm a marriage/couples counselor). The author says in the intro "Most self help books take 350 pages to tell you what they could have in 50 pages." I was sold. This book is especially for spouses who are told "You don't listen to me!" and think they are listening. Can't recommend it highly enough. It teaches the skill of validation, which is a powerful skill to have in any relationship, but especially marriage.

Notwithstanding the excellent books referenced today, you boys should be ashamed, and I am mortified, that The Meathead Method does not even garner an honorable mention. There should be a method for automatic expulsion.
I'm starting the Great Books of the Western World 10-year reading list. First up is Plato's Apology and Crito. Project Gutenberg has the Cary translation available for free.
Holy cow! I just looked at the list. Year six The Old Testament and War and Peace plus 16 other books!! 😆😆 There’s no way I could read that much. I might cherry pick some of the novels. The list is way too philosophy-centric for me. My mind would start wandering and then 4 paragraphs later…”what did I just read?” Epic journey for you. Good luck.
STEbbq It's something I've always wanted to do. I didn't really get a true liberal arts education at college (my fault) and feel like this is my best shot at tackling life's big questions.
JCBBQ Some of the selections are chapters. E.g. you don't read all of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, but it does look like you read all of W&P. I guess that's why it takes 10 years! We'll see how far I get.
Looking into some of the classics I never read before. Just finished Moby Dick by Herman Melville and now am about 60% (so says my Kindle which has these books for free) of the way through Les Misérables by Victor Hugo.

Reason: Edited out a typo
MarkN I picked up Moby Dick just like you did and read it. My analysis: Funny intro with interesting characters and dialogue, History of whaling in the 19th Century; Whacky story about the pursuit of something that we don't quite understand and probably never will. I'm glad I read it, but I'd just like to stick to the first third of the book and let the rest of it go :-)
Moby Dick WAS a struggle for me. It seemed like the entire middle 2/3 of the book was a digression into minutiae (not really interested in how many vertebrae a whale has).

But seriously, I reread some Tom Clancy books over the past month, just finished Rainbow Six. Also seriously, I'm starting The Meathead Method tonight.
I’m a sucker for good historical fiction. Bernard Cornwell has some great series. I’m taking a break now but have recently “read” (I listen on Audible) 9 of the Richard Sharpe books. British soldier early 1800s - started out in India, now’s he’s in the early Napoleonic Wars. There’re something like 25 of them.
