Price of Eggs and Bird Flu

This article says it all. Estimates are 128 million plus birds affected including egg laying chickens.

I was at the grocery store last night buying eggs. The first two 18 packs were $6.80 but any after that would have been $13.83. Glad I didn't need more than two.

Haven't looked at chicken prices recently though. Guessing those will see a similar jump.

Shouldn't. Laying hens are in production waaaaaaaaaay longer than the broilers sold in the stores.

Egg prices have crept up again around here. They are nearly $5/dozen, whereas a few weeks ago they had dropped below $4, even below $3.50.

Costco is at $6.99 for a 24 pack. Seems pretty reasonable (for now).

The latest Bird Flu report from the CDC as of yesterday:

In February 2022, USDA’s APHIS announced an HPAI A(H5N1) virus outbreak in commercial poultry.

          And from the USDA

I don't believe anything the CDC says anymore. It sucks that this is the case, but it is what it is.

Store brand at Mariano’s today was $6+ for dozen. Thankfully they had a premium brand for $4.99/dozen. Hopefully it’s an okay price at Costco when as go there soon.

I really think now is a good time to stock up on all types of meat if you can. Chicken, beef and pork. Crazy times....

Trying to keep a positive spin on this... even at $6/dozen, still an inexpensive source of protein comparatively speaking.

Funny my fishing buddy and I went out for breakfast this morning discussing eggs and that is exactly what he said.

Uhh, didn't somebody mention this on Dec 28, in the egg price conversation, and you guys blew it right off? Really.

Kind of hard to do that right now after years of being gaslit over Covid.

So this just dawned on me…. So bird flu has affected every chicken egg farm? Every chicken egg farm? If not, are those NOT affected raising prices when they really shouldn’t?

(Twirling blonde hair and looking naive)

im going to farmers market in a few and I will ask my vendors…..

IMHO, if you are not monitoring yer market, and raising or lowering as per same, you will not be in the biz very long. Unless you have unlimited funding.

The egg vendor I saw today said her eggs are now $15/doz. Insane! I asked if her birds don’t have bird flu, why are HER eggs so much. She said demand.

Demand = Gouging. Any farmer unaffected by bird flu hasn't spent any more money to produce their eggs than they would have if they were selling at a lower price, at which they still would have made an acceptable profit, but they take advantage of the crisis to line their pockets.

My fried who has chikkins says he hasn't gotten a single egg since November until he pulled a SINGLE egg this week. He has at times gotten 15-18 a day from his flock, they just... stopped laying. Like, completely. No idea why, nothing else has changed, except the cold, but he's had chikkins for several years and hasn't experienced a drought like this in the winter, really.

Odd. They'd probably be dead already if it was HPAI. Hence the reason to use "Highly Pathogenic" in the name. Ya thinkin' they went on strike to support better biosecurity measures where the other hens live or for the guvment to do something about migrating birds spreading this stuff so much?? Have them checked for Salpingitis.

We bought eggs for $1.98 lbs. at Bargin Market, went back, and now a dozen eggs for $6.00 plus.

I predict that this will eventually to all be revealed as BS like 99.9% of what we were gaslit about Covid.
