I don't believe that the farmer gets compensation for the loss except for a loss on taxes. USDA and State dept of public health makes the decision to depopulate the flock.

I’m not familiar with how egg producing flocks are managed but am with meat birds. In almost all cases the farmer doesn’t own the birds. The birds are owned by the poultry company (Perdue, Tyson ….) itself which hatches, stocks, and removes the chickens from the house. The poultry company also provides the feed the chickens eat. The correct term for the farmer is chicken grower as he is paid a per bird fee that he successfully grows. Federal regs do not compensate for depopulated birds or eggs.

      Insurance claim. Maybe.

I just read the latest update. There’s no signs of it abating. Yes, It’s also infecting dairy cows, and yes, domestic cats. Human cases are still very rare, and those reported have been “quite mild”.

I’m still Team Egg. My normal switch would be to Team Avocado, but those are more ridiculous than eggs right now, and reports are that they’ll be competing with gold and bitcoin soon.

Soak a tablespoon of chia seeds with water, will replace one egg in a recipe.

acorgihouse as a replacement for egg in a recipe. Not solely on its own.
Similar to stevia or Splenda in place of sugar.
I do not think it would work for a wash, dunno have not tried that.

Great time to have federal health agencies forbidden from communicating. And weren't eggs supposed to be magically cheaper by now? Oh... right.

yakima Earlier you asked about the authority by which the bird flocks are depopulated. Here is the policy book covering this. It was published in 2017.

We just had another major outbreak here today so a few more million birds have been put down... HOWEVER check your news people. Even our local news tried to tie this to eggs or chicken meat prices.... after further research and jumping through hoops only then did I discover it was a Turkey farm with no Chickens affected. There was an egg farm affected here earlier this month and a few sources tried to tie the numbers and effects together.

I'm not trying to downplay the issue, but some outlets are certainly trying to stir up excess drama

I am going to offer my opinion here. Meaning that I could be wrong. Lets just say that a punch of pitmasters lived in a 1000 square foot home. We were elbow to elbow, but we did have food and water put in front of us. Beyond that our waste would be surrounding us. Then lets just say, I got sick. It is very likely that the person next to me is going to get sick and before long everyone in the house is going to be sick.

The bird flu has existed for decades and while it is very serious and all of this is a problem. The greater problem is the way our food is managed. We must get away from mass production and back to a more traditional way of food distribution. If not everyone including our animals will suffer....

Food for thought…and like you, just my opinion so I could be wrong.
A lot of mouths to feed in this country (and around the world). Not sure traditional small farm methods could meet the demand

Finster I get it and agree. However, what I dont know is how much of what is being raised is imported or exported. But the greater point is that we can indeed raise large amounts of meat and produce without employing the current conditions. High volumes can indeed be raised in a more traditional way that is both safer and healthier. If anyone is interested, I suggest reading some of Joel Salatin's work at Polyface Farm

Agree we need to find ways to do better.
Will check out Salatin's work for sure

DavidNorcross I’m am in agreement with many of your thoughts on how we should raise some animals. While my only personal experience has just been raising a flock of backyard chickens and another of quail I am kept in the loop on HPAI due to a business relationship with a large poultry grower’s association. In modern mass production of commercial birds they are raised in as close to isolated environment as they can be to prevent the spread of disease and every farm must have bio-security measures in place. In addition the flocks are watched over by poultry company specialists and vets besides the growers who depend on healthy birds for their livelihoods. Unfortunately wild birds are one of the driving forces in the spread of HPAI and even an infected Wren entering an open finishing house door can wipe out 100’s of thousands of birds.
          • ‘To better protect their flocks, poultry producers and backyard flock owners must realize that what occurs in wild birds does impact the health of their birds and that this is not only a problem along Delaware's coast, which is where many of the reported dead birds have been located so far. Those birds that are not sick or are strong enough to fly in the morning will then take flight, moving inland to open space, including farm fields, to forage. At that time that virus can be introduced to poultry farms and areas where backyard flocks are commingling with wildlife or are not under cover, protecting them from infected wild bird droppings. Snow geese are very mobile, flying as far into Maryland or New Jersey in a day.”
Our issues down here are Canadian Geese, Snow Geese, and unfortunately Bald Eagles which are consuming infected dead birds. I have to agree with Finster and add that right now I honestly believe the current system is helping control the spread of HPVI rather than being a hindrance.

Just bought some eggs at HEB. My usual and they are now just two cents under $5. I will say this, if you are into organic eggs....wow you are going to pay for them. One brand was $9.61/dozen.

Things seem to be more-or-less okay here in Texas. Egg distribution is fairly local as, obviously, eggs are perishable.

On social media, I have noticed a trend for the photos that shows shelves utterly devoid of eggs. These seem to be more upscale chains (e.g. Whole Foods, Trader Joe's) that tend to stock only organic or more "boutique" eggs brands, with eggs in particular cartons coming from very specific farms.

(By contrast, my HEB branded eggs could easily be from one farm one week and, perhaps, two different farms the next week.)

Michael_in_TX I don’t understand what is an inorganic egg? I still get mine from the lady at the hardware store. They’re $7.00 for 18 eggs. Talk about farm raised when you open the box there are brown ones, white ones and a few green ones. I can serve green eggs and ham.

                WHOOOOOAAAAAAHHHHHH.

I just checked WalMart online and my 'usual' XL white eggs are now up from $3.59 I think a few weeks ago to $6.12 a dozen. Sheesh! $9.02 for 18.

                That's almost a 70% increase.

realdocBBQ I don't know if prices are consistent nationally. It might behoove you to see what their price is. Here in Western Massachusetts, the prices has been consistent. My wife was there this week and she gets at least 2 dozen at a time. I think 3 this time as she is doing some cooks that call for eggs. Now dang she baked a corn bread the other day. All this egg talk, some eggs, hash browns and toasted corn bread with butter. Looks like I know what brunch is tomorrow.
