Don’t you love that it’s become viral to publicly freak out? Wish we could go back to a time when no one cared about random opinions.

I've been paying an old farmer to leave me 2 or 3 dozen eggs every other week for maybe 15 years, after he serviced my elderly neighbors for 30 years before that. He was $2 per dozen around 2020. Now he is up to $6. I am kinda concerned though, as he missed last Friday's egg drop, which is unusual. He is also 85+, and I worry about him. Hopefully he shows up again.

The nearby Walmart is up to $5.46 for a dozen Great Value brand large eggs. Those used to be under $1. Eggland's Best is $6.06 a dozen.

EDIT: The webpage shows that the local Neighborhood Walmart is OUT OF STOCK on all eggs. The Super Walmart a few miles further down the road has the Great Value eggs, but nothing else.

I stopped there today, and there were no eggs. I saw one lady with eggs in her basket. I think she got the last ones.

When we were there on Wednesday, at least 75% of the shopping carts had eggs in them. There were a couple of pallets of eggs in the cooler.

Saw a dozen at Jewel yesterday for $7! Thankfully a friend dropped off some eggs earlier in the week that he gets from a farm by his parents house.

I bought a dozen and a half brown eggs yesterday for $3. My wife is on the local library board and the librarian has 79 layers. Production is down with the cold but enough to provide eggs to a few people.

I also bought a quarter beef this week for $4.36 lb. I love living in rural Iowa.

BTW, beef has gone up. I paid a buck a pound more than last year.

Went up to $10-$12/doz this past weekend. Costco was out. Also, the grocery store unions are striking at one chain so it’s gonna be interesting.

So, eggs have gone up and are scare because of bird flu, but there is an abundance of chicken in the stores. Why is that?

Laying hens are different than broilers. Hens have a much longer life span to get sick. Store chicken is about 7 weeks old.

As Jerod Broussard said, broilers are young. Layers have a lifespan that is 3 years at max, then they either go into chicken soup or become dogfood. But the bird flu had hit poultry meant for consumption as well. Some of the major turkey producer have been hit, and there was a shortage last Thanksgiving. You didn't see as many of the deals as in other years.

Ok, I pulled a few articles on it. They weren't in depth, but I get the gist. Thanks.

The demand is starting to really drive these prices. The chicken you see in the store has a longer date and the demand is soon going to catch that supply as well. . Once folks start trying to stock up on chicken the prices will increase and the availability will go way down. Eggs on the other hand may possibly become non existent. This is the toilet paper dilemma on steroids. If you have never stored a supply of food now may be a good time to start....

The first time I tried to stock my freezer with some chicken and other things, which was recently, the power company turned off our electricity because of the fires. Any other time, I wouldn't have had anything but some frozen vegetables, bacon end bits and some bones for stock. Go figure.

$5.25 a dozen last Saturday at the local Farmer's Market.
Up from $4.95 a dozen a few weeks ago.
Will see what they are this week when I shop tomorrow.
Overall, their prices have remained pretty steady despite market fluctuations elsewhere

Wow, that's a great price right now. I'd buy more and contribute to the panic. lol

Yup. Talked to the lady at the register and she said they get them from an egg farm here in Michigan and just redid their contract last week so the pricing did not change.

Our county just had a grower infected this week and that resulted in 221,000+ chickens destroyed. Also had a die off at a local public pond involving eight domestic geese, four Canada geese, two vultures, two common mergansers, a sea gull, a grackle, and a cormorant.
