We are pondering going. I've never been to one of these. I already blew off our trip to Austin for the eclipse due to the weather, so I kind of owe it to myself (how's that for logic?).

I of course love smoked meats of all kinds, but also like quick cooks like chicken portions, pork tenderloins, steak and fish. Really into cooking of all kinds.
My outdoor kitchen has a Lone Star Grillz Adjustable and it is wonderful. There also is a Pit Boss 5 Burner Ultimate Griddle and a Pit Boss Copperhead pellet grill.
There is an outdoor fire pit that has grilling capability and limited Santa Maria-style grill raising and lowering.
FireBoard 2 Pro
Anova Precision Cooker
Well, I tried, but it now looks like our plans aren’t going to work out this time. We will make it some time…

Here we go again. I am scheduled to have hernia surgery Friday (yeah, I know, Friday the 13th. But I am not superstitous. Really, I’m not. Seriously). Anyway, the recovery time is supposed to be 6 weeks. Which pushes right up against the meat up. I am not canceling though. I’ll wait and see how I am doing. But even if I show up, I am going to have to bow out of the pillow fight and me and Panhead John’s exotic dance recital. And I was planning on recruiting texastweeter and Uncle Bob to join the dance, dangit

I had abdominal dbl hernia surgery in 2000. I was still installing and sanding floors. Carrying the 235lb sander resulted in my affliction. My body was ripped. 165lbs 6-7% body fat. It took me a solid week to begin to get outa bed. I was soo surprised. I thought I was in betta shape than I actually was.

If there is anybody out there on the fence trying to decide whether to go or not, I would highly recommend that you do. I went last April to the Texas, San Marcos meat-up and it was a blast. The Texas contingent was very hospitable and accommodating, the hotel was very comfortable and the BBQ was exceptional.
Couple things I would recommend if you do go:- Don’t let anybody (John??) talk you into going to see a cave or other sight seeing tours. You’re there for BBQ. Stick to the game plan.
- if you’re from a non-BBQ state (and we know who we are) that only copies other states, then bring a little trinket or gift for the Texas clan. These BBQ gods need to be appeased

Regarding the cavern tour: I was stuffed so full I couldn't eat a bite, so it didn't replace anything. And it was pretty damn impressive and I'm glad I went there. I wouldn't go AGAIN, but it was awesome, in the truest meaning of that word.

Julia and I have been talking with Uncle Bob and Leigh about meeting at Interstellar on Thursday because it’s probably closer to both of us than it is to San Marcos.
I believe it took us about 45min to get to Leroy and Lewis which is in South Austin and Interstellar is in very far Northwest Austin which probably another 45 minutes.

Mosca is correct, I arrive Wed evening and could very easily be talked into it.

Anyone coming from the north on I-35 you can take the toll road (I believe it’s 45) from Round Rock west and it ends @ 620 about 3/4 of a mile from Interstellar.
If anyone wants to take a scenic drive to San Marcos after lunch I know the back way through the Hill Country past Lake Travis. You won’t find this one on any GPS map.Last edited by TxF; September 12, 2024, 02:14 PM.

For the rest of us who can’t make it Thursday, according to Maps, it’s about 1 hour and 2 minutes from San Marcos to Interstellar BBQ, that’s assuming you do the speed limit…😁 Should only takes 30 minutes if you ride with me…
A one hour drive is not too far IMO for some of the best BBQ on earth. For anyone else wanting to go there, I’m thinking we could do it Saturday morning, we won’t have to deal with all the weekday traffic.

I might be wrong, but when using Google Maps, I think it gives you the estimated drive time at the time you ask for the directions. In other words, I think their estimated drive time accounts for current traffic conditions. When I went back to double check the mileage/directions, it said 1 hour and 1 minute. It previously told me 1 hour and 2 minutes for the same route.Last edited by Panhead John; September 11, 2024, 04:02 PM.

Thursday won't work for us unfortunately.

You have a better chance of making that using the other route and staying off of I-35. Austin traffic is different because they have been trying not to build roads for 40 years.
I use Waze, which is basically the same as google and you get the best case scenario and then they add time as you go.

Have been unable to sell my latest creation, seems unlikely I'll be making the trip. Even if it does sell, I've had to lower the price to the point I'm not making much on it, and it seems I may have to lower it some more. So... oh well. Doubt I'll be there. I still have the reservation, and if I hit the lotto in the next few weeks, maybe I can keep the date. But I'm not gonna hold my breath.
Honestly not feeling super sociable these days anyways. Might not be the best company, ya'll may be lucky I'm not there. lol

Because the comments are getting long in my last post I’ll start another one for Leroy and Lewis. Julia and I went in the Spring, but we both had regular sandwiches and not much BBQ. Looks like the Friday special is Beef Cheeks, we had a sample and they were good, Saturday is Bacon Ribs and Brisket.
I’m guessing the locals will be out on Saturday after the biggest weekend of the year with Georgia playing the Longhorns and the F1 Race the weekend before. When we went last year we got there about 10:45 on Friday and were 2nd in line, once they opened the line grew exponentially. They did move people through quicker than most places with a line.

Well darn! I’m going to be about a month too early or the meet-up is a month too late. 🤔 I’m road-tripping down with a friend on the 20th from Oregon to Austin to get her car down there as she and her family are moving to Texas. Then I’m going to use her car for a few days to go to Houston to see my daughter before heading back to Austin to drop it off and fly home.
So I guess while I’m down there for a few days, I may need some ideas for Houston area. 😁

From TM…
Roegels Barbecue Co. (Honorable Mention)
The newly perfected house-made sausages are just the latest reason Roegels is a must-visit in Houston or their new location in Katy. Daily sandwich specials such as the state’s best pastrami Reuben (served on Thursdays at both locations) are reason enough to visit, so the great brisket and ribs are just gravy. 2223 S. Voss

Houston is packed with top notch BBQ joints Tami. Here’s a few more that garner high praise from almost everyone, including Bon Appetit magazine…..Blood Bros. BBQ…The Pit Room…Tejas Chocolate + BBQ [I’ve eaten there and it’s awesome!]…Gatlin’s BBQ…

Breaking news - got the hernia stuffed back in this morning and so far things are looking up. It may just be that the anesthesia hasn't completely worn off but the pain seems manageable so i am thinking that while the recovery won't be a breeze, it shouldn't be too bad. So i am 99.999999% sure I am in. I am going to look into flying in on Wednesday. Get ready, captainlee. We got some proper pizza conversatin to do

Should I go with the gators and the 7 inch .45, or the ostrich and the 5.5 inch .357? Panhead John

texastweeter my first pair were some pearl gray ostrich. I used to wear them to an office job in PA. I became the subject of many conversations. Panhead John and stage name brisket, as for beans in chili, no amount of 45, 357, or buckshot will change the fact that they belong.
