I've pretty much decided to go, just not how. I did the Mosca thing and signed up for Marriott rewards this afternoon. Got distracted, so will make reservation in am. Car vs plane bugs me, a three day meandering road trip, each way, could be a revelation, but... I used to travel, a lot, so I could fly Tampa to Austin by first class on Delta miles, and I have enough free National car rental days. Should use all that, but hate planes, airports and rental cars. So. The choice is pretty clear, I've just been resistant, so I will book it all in am and report back.

Mosca I agree, I have been sitting on these points and miles for some time. I have no interest in using them anymore, no place left I want to go! Still they sit there, so this is a good use. You are correct, the last thing I want to do is drive over there, and then be stuck driving home when I don't want to. I joined the Marriott thing, as I like the free internet and whatnot, but that is it. Don't give me things to keep up with in the future!

When we traveled more I used Hilton Honors. Same idea: room discounts, WiFi, a free water every day (Sid P 😉), and every now and then enough points to get a couple free nights. Now we don’t travel enough to get the free night, so it doesn’t matter if I stay here or there.

In case anyone is wondering, the hotel will have free WiFi for everyone, whether you’re a Marriott Rewards Member or not. Not sure why they advertise free WiFi for their members.

Thought long n hard bout it. Kim says she aint spending 1000 miles in a veh then turning around and doing it again.
I wouldn't mind but have not made trips like that for over 40 yrs. Flying would take away ALL the fun for me.
Just wouldn't be right for me to go by myself eh?

What would be wrong with going by yourself? At least half of us do just that. Of course it’s easy for me to say, not being married and all. 😂

PJ the going would not be the difficult part. It would be the weeks after the return.

Willy thanks man! This will be my 5th time for the thrilling groin shave. Twice for stents over 15 years ago. Twice this last year for ablations and now for this. I have a great group of doctors. Surprisingly if this goes well I’ve got a good heart still. My wife has a big
purse I’ll probably have her go get me a bite to eat at Terry Blacks in Waco. If it’s as good as the one in Lockhart I’ll be fine. If not I’ll ask her to get me a Whopper from Burger King. I appreciate your sharing with me.

One bad thing about the groin shave is when they do it, you’re always at your smallest, uh, well, you know…😂

Flying is stressful, but only for the hour or so that you’re being herded like cattle. Once that’s done there’s no lingering hangover effect. Driving, while more relaxing because you have more control, is the low level stress of paying hard attention for 20 or so hours across 1000 miles. Plus there is a hangover effect.

I’m actually very much an introvert; I’d rather think and write than talk face to face with folks. I skipped the first few meetups thinking that it’s not my milieu and travel is a pain in the ass. But they are definitely a stone cold blast, and worth the stress of travel and worth the energy required to engage in real time.

Isn't it funny that a lot of us in sales are actually introverts?

I’ve thought about that, yes. I think it’s because the best salesmen listen more than they talk. How many times have you seen a rookie talk and talk, and talk right through the sale? Customers don’t want a friend, they want a business relationship they can trust. They trust someone who listens to them.

OK, I am flying into Austin. Will arrive Wed, in Austin ~3:40pm. By the time I get rental car, and drive to SM, I should be there by 5 or so. Will leave Sunday, from Austin at ~12:30pm, so will have breakfast and take off. Looking forward to it, headed to Marriott now.

I just realized: I can get up early on Thursday and hit Franklin BBQ if I want to, taking advantage of my solitary status to do something that might not work in a group setting.

        I’ll consider that.

I think it’s more a decision based on how much time I’m willing to invest in an incrementally better taste experience. Plus people say the wait is actually part of the fun (I’m skeptical on that one).

Mosca Tom, we waited in line for 6 hours at Snow’s during the 1st Meat Up. The conversation with the two brothers behind us who had been reared as vegetarians and the college students in front of us was at least as good as the food experience. I m pretty sure it isn’t always the case, but it can be.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: If anyone is going to stay an additional day outside of our Thursday-Sunday block, please call the hotel directly and ask for either Marisa or Jeanetta in order to get our discounted rate of $139. for the additional day[s]. So, if you’re coming in Wednesday instead of Thursday…or leaving Monday instead of Sunday, you must call the hotel and ask for one of those 2 ladies, otherwise you could be charged the regular rate for the additional night[s]. Be sure and tell them you’re with the AmazingRibs.com group.
The hotel number is 512-812-0044. Thanks and…..carry on. 🥸

Thank you, I spoke with Marisa today and came here to say same. After I couldn't change the dates online yesterday, I called. The woman who answered told me I needed to book online to get the rate, and that I would have to book the extra night as a 2nd res, for separate charge. I tried that, and the extra night booking required payment immediately and non refundable. So, I wasn't happy, booked Thur-Sun and was going to figure out later. Today, Marisa found out, called me, added the extra night/1

2/ at the $139 charge, knew that "Mr. Tom" had done that, and said she was also going to talk to "Mr. John" to let anyone else know. And "what else can we do for you and your group?" Quite happy now

Yes, they’re really nice folks at the hotel. When I first called to ask about a group rate for us, Marisa said she’d check with Jeanetta for me. I called back an hour later and was given the $139. rate right off the bat, didn’t have to try and haggle with em. Right now, the normal rate for our rooms is $189. per night, so we’re getting a good deal!

texastweeter - Got rid of my Blackhawks a while back. Since then, stock Redhawk grips have been adequate to date ... even with the heavy stuff I used to carry for big Browns.

FWIW, thankfully, the only shots I ever had to fire in anger back in the day were to remove limbs from trees that wouldn't give up stuck flies from (shall we say) "'slightly' less than perfect" back casts.

I just called the hotel and they added some more rooms to the block for us. We have 5 King rooms left and 1 double Queen room. If the double queen gets booked and someone later wants one and it’s not showing up, PM me and I’ll arrange to get more blocked off for us
