Breaking News! 🙄 October 24-27 Texas Hill Country Meatup Plans Are Finalized…

Alrighty folks, it’s almost time for another Texas Ho Down! At the last MeatUp in April we barely scratched the surface of top notch BBQ places to visit. There are so many other joints we didn’t have time for. So, the highly esteemed Texas MeatUp Committee, consisting of myself, Uncle Bob , 58limited and a few others, who wish to remain anonymous because they don’t want to be publicly associated with me, have decided to return to San Marcos! There was universal praise for almost every place we visited. If you made the last trip in April, c’mon back if you can. If you haven’t made a MeatUp yet, c’mon down, we’d love to have you. You’ll be guaranteed to eat some of the best BBQ you’ve ever had. In fact, at the last MeatUp a few people actually said it was the best they’ve ever had, period. At these MeatUps, we welcome all Pit Members, their spouses and friends. In addition to good food, you’ll get to meet some of your fellow Pit Members and tell a bunch of lies, bad mouth the moderators and experience the infamous Friday Night Pillow Fights! 🥸 Here’s the scoop:

WHEN: Thursday October 24 thru Sunday October 27
The weather is great down here this time of year, no sweaters required.

WHERE: San Marcos, Tx. In between San Antonio and Austin

ACCOMMODATIONS: This time we’ll be staying at The Residence Inn by Marriot, a new hotel in San Marcos that should be perfect for our group. You can choose between a single King Room or a double Queen room. ALL rooms are an open floor plan with a small kitchenette with a FULL SIZE REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER, stove, microwave, coffee maker and dishes/utensils! Having a full size fridge is a big plus not found in most places. We’ll be close to I-35 for easy access to our destinations. There’s also a complimentary hot breakfast each morning. There’s a large and nicely furnished meeting area downstairs for us to gather each day. The last place we stayed in April would have been significantly higher for us this time. They wanted $169. per king room and $199. for a double queen room! OUR SPECIAL RATE AT THE RESIDENCE INN IS $139. PER NIGHT….for either a single bed king room or a double queen room. That’s not bad at all!

You can start booking your rooms now if you like. As per usual, you may cancel the room if needed, up to 24 hours before arrival with no cancellation fee. The fun starts as soon as you get there Thursday! Yes, folks check in on Thursday afternoon, we all meet later on downstairs for drinks or whatever. Thursday night we usually eat some good Mexican food nearby.

I just booked my room for Thursday thru Sunday. I’ll be bringing my girlfriend Halle Berry with me again. Here’s a picture of us at the last MeatUp. We were taking a long romantic walk on the beach in San Marcos…

Well it’s the same 1256 miles away that it was the last time I didn’t make it there. I just don’t want to fly for travel anymore. After 30 years of it, I just don’t have it in me anymore. So if I come down, it would be by car.

My best friend lives in St. Louis which is right on the way according to Google Maps. So maybe I can do a drive to there, stay for a day or two, and continue on. Then stop there again on the way back. In fact, he will be here at my place for a visit next week. We’ll discuss it. Maybe he’ll even come along. 🤷‍♂️

If you can convince him to join you it would make the trip that much more enjoyable for you. We are equal opportunity abusers, so he would get mocked just as much as anyone else, it will make him feel part of the group.

Booked my room! By phone, again.

<rant>I do everything on my laptop (its only two years old, not from the 1950s y'all); I buy sell, trade, forums, etc and have no problems but let me try and reserve a hotel room and there are always issues. This time when I was filling out the reservation form online the drop down menus to select country of origin and state would not work in Firefox or Chrome, even with a computer restart and disabling my firewall and antivirus. The website would not let me make a reservation without the drop down info. This is one reason that I hate drop down menus for state or country - I can type faster than scrolling to a selection. In other words drop downs waste my time and royally piss me off when they don't work. </rant>

I'm looking forward to this Meat Up. Familiar friends and hopefully some new ones will be there. Lots of BBQ places in that general area, it would take several more Meat Ups to hit them all.

I don't want to invite bad karma for myself, as I tried the past two meatups and had disasterous interruption of plans. Both times. I want to try again, but am another not much into airline interactions right now, and it's ~1200 miles from here. Two full driving days, with an overnight somewhere between Pensacola and NOLA, so not awful. Still. Health issues have plagued me the past six months or so, but better managed now, so we shall see. Going to try.

The North Carolina drive was 500 miles for me. I did it in one day, each direction. I’d recommend three days with two stops.

Agree with Mosca I had about 1,150 miles one way to North Carolina for the MeatUp. I did 3 days with 2 stops also. Trying to cram that much into 2 days, too much for me anyway. I got on the road at 6:30-7 each morning, stopped for lunch and then pulled in for the day around 2:00-3:00 each afternoon
