I have never thought of gumbo as soup, but if it is a soup that would be the one. If I had to choose another it would be a bean soup.

Donw I know, but I grew up in New Orleans eating it with a heavy serving of rice on a plate rather than in a bowl. When I eat it in a restaurant it is in a bowl and skimpy on rice.

I have fond memories visiting NO, and you're onto something with gumbo! We had a NO chef in Indy who opened a restaurant called Papa Roux's and it was my fav for years.

Damn guys! It’s 100* outside and now y’all got me wanting to make some roux. 😱

Until reading through the responses on this thread, I never thought of chili as a soup. I've always placed it in its own category. You've got chili, chili with beans, green chili, turkey chili, etc. If I had to place it in a category, I think I'd call it more of a stew than a soup. Am I wrong?

Panhead John FireMan ecowper I've been lured so far into this rabbit hole by all 3 of you that I must hereby ban myself. But I still call all savory broth-heavy meals in a bowl eaten with a spoon to be a soup, dernnit.

LA Pork Butt Beef Stew comes in a bowl and you eat it with a spoon. Meets my definition of soup...lol.

Old Glory I don’t recall ever eating it in a bowl, but I have never eaten it in a restaurant. I’ll count it as a soup and add it to my list.

Maryland cream of crab soup would be 4th on my list. It would have been higher in my ratings if crab meat wasn’t so expensive right now.☹️

        Too many options...
        Italian Wedding Soup
        Some variety of chili
        Potato Soup

At the moment that would be the 3, good variety. But there's so many more...

Actually it's a delicious lentil soup with super flavorful Indian spices. Like ChickenTikka Masala, it's a blend of British and Indian influence. That and Lemon Rasam soup are the two Indian soups that I make that my family asks for time and again.

My Mulligatawny Soup recipe is a riff on the famous Madhur Jaffrey's recipe.

While New England Clam Chowder is a fine addition to any soup list, most people prefer Authentic Texas Clam Chowder. 😁
