Well, I think hotdogs and burgers is a cook I can manage over a long weekend!

I've had past years where I had a half dozen meats running on the 4th on the grill and smoker (brisket, pulled pork, ribs, burgers, dogs, brats and chicken). But the days we would have 30+ extended family members over here swimming and hanging out all day are in the past, so a sane cook of just burgers and dogs will do nicely...

Now, if the weather will warm back up and get my pool back out of the 70's before the 4th...

This weekend its forecasted to be 100+ in DFW, I would love a pool in the 70's!

Purc gonna be in the 90's for the next 8 to 10 days here, so the water will warm up fast. Our HVAC compressor blew a seal overnight, and lost all R-22 and a bunch of oil, and is beyond repair. Waiting now for a new unit to be installed on TUESDAY (4 days from now)! Thankfully I had a 1 ton window unit in the garage, that I almost sold on Facebook Marketplace to a guy yesterday, but I fell asleep instead of messaging him back. It's now pumping out cold air in the den/kitchen...

Well when Panhead John put this out here I thought, "hell, what can I do that would stand out other than the usual mind blowing pics of amazing burgers The Pit offers up?" I'm not a creative type of sort when it comes to original recipes. Sure, you find one and tweak it to your liking, but to come up with it on your own from scratch I figured this is my chance!

I immediately thought "burgers and dogs cook off", mmm, what could I do different that would standout and more importantly be fun (and ultimately taste good)? How about both...I thought? So with the wealth of the amazing creators here, coupled with the unavoidable tidal wave of cooking/BBQ resources out there (none better than The Pit, BTW), I'll combine the two for one epic sandwich! I was and am certain what I did has to have been done before somewhere...but was not undeterred, because this was to be mine with no guidelines (picture Captain Barbosa here). But there must be a trial run before my entrance into my first "competition".

I will start with the aftermath for a bit of change: The point was a trial run, so the pics are more raw. Notice the creature in the upper left. He's not quite 2yrs old and is befuddled by this decadence.

Simple beginnings not knowing how the puff pastry would react to added moisture.

All 4 monstrosities got the same smash burger, AM cheese, open face grilled Hebrew National dog, homemade hot dog chili (amazing recipe By Sam The Cooking Guy) and cheddar cheese.

We are not bakers, but the wife fashioned the puff pastry to accommodate my madness.

    Conclusion:

Not worth the effort. The hot dogs dominated every bite (mother effers!) No smash burger taste at all. The puff pastry (not a surprise) was ridiculously flaky for this experiment. The best versions were the ones that had mustard and or ketchup and more importantly pickles to give it a pop of brightness.

No regrets and full disclosure...I posted this while trying to figure out why the rum is gone. Oh...I know why...

Well, we just made burgers last week, so my contribution will have to be brats, steaks, and a tri tip.

I haven't done smoked burgers in quite a while, so this will be perfect for this weekend. I'll also make my own buns.

Its supposed to be 30 Centigrad (85 Fahrenheit) on Saturday so will not be turning on the oven so will pass on homemade buns. Maybe I could do them on the pellet grill, we'll see how that goes.

I’m with you! I house-grind my own chuck and patty into 6 oz burgers. Season liberally w Kosher salt and “smoke” with hickory on a 2-zone fire (cool side), then finish over the heat and top with double sharp-cheddar slices. Placed atop a butter grilled Brioche bun and you have attained burger Nirvana.

The in-laws got 4th this year, so I’m out of the rotation. I got the “make a big salad” request. My salads are pretty epic, so that’s going to be fun anyhow.

I’m driving the kids to Newark International tomorrow. Assuming their flight actually leaves (flights have been on schedule the last two days) then maybe Sunday.

Any idea of the story behind the delayed flights.
i have some friends that have been in FLA for 3 extra days now because flights keep getting bumped. seems like it's a thing now.
What the hell is going on around here?

Finster Saturday, Sunday, and Monday’s delays were weather related: thunderstorms in New Jersey and Florida caused delays, and then flight crews went over the time allotted, and then those passengers filled Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday’s spare seats, and all the kids could get were Saturday. They tried a different departure airport, but AA wouldn’t accommodate without an upgrade fee, so the delays were region-wide it seems.

Camping (well, Glamping) with friends and will be pretty much incommunicado, but I'll snap some shots if something like that occurs.

Thanks for all the replies folks! I’ve started a new post to show your burger and/or hot dog pics for the 4th of July weekend. Feel free to post any of your pics from here, to the new post if you wish.

Alrighty folks, today starts the long 4th of July weekend and this is where we can post all our hamburger and hot dog cooks. I’m curious to see what might be paired with them as sides. I’m usually just a chips or French fries guy, but I’d love to see what else y’all come up with, that goes good with them. Plain ol’ grilled

I was gonna flip burgers on the flat top, but with the heat, I am starting to think I may smoke some ribs and brats, so that all I have to do is nab it off the grill when the Smoke alarm goes off, and carry it back into the cool indoors.
