You guys are killing me. I pretty much blew my travel budget for the year on this last MeatUp and subsequent travel. Now I think I need to start saving any cash I can and try to make it down there in October for the food if nothing else. We’ll see how that goes I guess. 🤷‍♂️

About 25-30 years ago, my first (but not last) experience with alligator was in Lafayette at Poorboys Riverside Inn. I was early, the place was empty, and my waitress was pretty much like meeting Justin Wilson in drag (accent and all).

I asked about the fried gator bits and she provided the following (insert your own memory of Justin Wilson's Cajun accent):

"Some people say that ol’ Mr. Gator, he taste like chicken. Other people say that ol’ Mr. Gator, he taste like rubber. To me, that ol’ Mr. Gator taste like rubber chicken."

The food was great, the service was awesome (and funny as hell) ... and the gator was awesome, too (albeit a bit like rubber chicken).

My partner in crime 58limited just texted me another restaurant we might consider while we’re there. It’s about 15 minutes NE of Lafayette. For a semi-small city like Lafayette, they seem to have just an embarrassment of riches in the area. Check out the view, it’s called The Little Big Cup and it’s located on Bayou Tesch in nearby Arnaudville.

Just wanted to update everyone…..Danielle from the visitors center has sent me a few possibilities for our accommodations in October. One here is the Homewood Suites by Hilton Lodge in Lafayette. I don’t have any rates for us yet, have not contacted the hotels yet. Their standard rates can be viewed from their website. It fits within our guidelines of 100-150 per night without any group discounts. If you scroll through the pics on the Homewood Suites below, you can see the outdoor seating area…it has 2 gas grills also.

Another excellent choice she said would be the The Courtyard by Marriott Lafayette South.

be careful about booking a place with a business center. You’ll probably be sneaking off to run your paper plate empire all the time.

Just as a heads up, here’s the plan going forward. 58limited and myself will be going to Lafayette on a pre-MeatUp visit to check out a few hotels, restaurants and possible attractions to make sure we can ensure the best possible experience for everyone who might be interested in attending. …..We’ll be going not this weekend, but the next… June 3rd and 4th. As much as it pains us, we’ll be going to the Poorboys Riverside Inn to make sure no one is poisoned by the horrific looking food posted on their website…. Yeah I know, we’re real troopers for doing this for y’all.

In the meantime, if anyone is interested in going, but you have a particular weekend in October that you cannot make, please let us know in the meantime. I hope to announce the dates of the MeatUp and the hotel choice soon after June 4th.

As I mentioned earlier, David 58limited and myself are now in Lafayette scouting out things ahead of our Cajun Country MeatUp this October. Our first stop was Old Tyme Grocery, a little place well known for their po boys. I had a delicious oyster po boy and David got the catfish po boy.

One of the 3 hotels that Danielle from the visitors center recommended was The Homewood Suites by Hilton. This is where David and I are staying tonight. We both like this place! Very nice downstairs seating area as well as a spacious outdoor seating area with a gazebo! They also serve a hot breakfast buffet daily, which is included with your room, no extra charge…….Bacon, eggs, sausage, grits or oatmeal, bagels etc. The discounted group rate for October is from $129.-$149. per night. They really rolled out the red carpet for David and I, we got our rooms for $79! .... a frickin steal for how nice the rooms are, spacious too. They also had a special “gift bag” for us waiting in our rooms. I’ll show pics of our gift bag.

Man, let me tell you….David and I just finished having a fantastic meal at Prejean’s Cajun Restaurant, 10 minutes or so from the hotel. This was a place highly recommended by Danielle and many others. I’ll let David speak for himself, but I just had one of the best meals I’ve had in a while. This is the real deal, authentic Cajun food at its best! I ordered the Shrimp Trinity which was…..shrimp and grits, fried Gulf shrimp and Zydeco stuffed shrimp with hush puppies. David ordered an appetizer of grilled oysters and gave me a couple….wowzer! They were killer…a touch of heat to them with some cheese and a little green onion, I could have eaten a dozen! I’ve never had shrimp and grits before, but I can’t imagine other’s tasting any better than these were, truly awesome! The stuffed shrimp and fried shrimp were among the best I’ve had.

What else was great about this place was the atmosphere. Live Cajun music outdoors on the patio if you wanted to, or you could go inside the restaurant where the sound was subdued, but still at a level you could hear it while conversing without yelling…..perfect!

As John said this was a solid Cajun meal, one of the best I've had. As good as my Catfish Atchafalaya was, John's shrimp Trinity looked better. John let me try the Shrimp and Grits and they were excellent. I fell in love with shrimp and grits at a wedding in Raleigh, NC twelve years ago and I order them any chance I get. These are among the best I've had.

The oysters were top notch, good flavor from the grill and lots of garlic, cheese, and spice without being overpowering.

The Catfish Atchafalaya, fried catfish served with crawfish etouffee, was excellent as well. The side was a good Mache Choux.

As John said, this was a fun place with good music and is representative of a typical restaurant in this region
