PKB, that is a deflector from Hunsaker, they call it a Vortex (yeah, confusing with the same name for the funnel dohickey), supposedly "swirls" the smoke. That's also their version of a hanging device, both parts they market for the WSM crowd, but fits the Bronco...........................I like toys.............

So, that's the WSM Vortex Charcoal basket, or the deflector plate? And the 18 or the 22? Also, that hanging device looks like you get a couple extra inches to hang... might keep you from bending the rack of ribs...

Actually their hanger isn't appreciably different in height from the OJB arms. The Vortex deflector gains less than an inch in room by virtue of sitting right on the fuel basket, so nothing to get real excited about from that standpoint.

Best price I"ve seen was at Lowes at Hagerstown MD in mid Oct 2020. Retail at the time was $299.99. They had a sale trying to reduce their stock. Price was 50% off - $149.99! In store only. I already had one but I got my buddy to get one. He was very happy - even with the long drive out there. Still is!

Edit: BTW, any of y'all want a second shelf for the other side, they're right here: Shelf | Oklahoma Joe's® (oklahomajoes.com)

...and the stock cover is already cut to fit perfectly with the second shelf.

I ordered from Target because I've had good service from them. My OKJ Bronco was scheduled for deliver yesterday. Everyday since Tuesday I have received an e-mail that my delivery day has been revised - basically it has been bumped a day with each e-mail. As of this morning's e-mail it is now set for Wednesday next week. I checked Walmart.com with the idea of cancelling the Target order and buying from Walmart but the sale is over now. I'm pretty annoyed with Target at this moment.

Not sure if it is coming FEDEX or via another courier - their website isn't specifying. I guess I was lucky during the pandemic: I had very few issues with shipping, even with FEDEX.

First cook. I am impressed. This thing may become my favorite. Small pork tenderloin, once I got it to 225-230 it just stayed there. Recovery when I opened the lid was a little slow. Once I had it to around 135 I decided to try and sear on it, so I took everything out and set the lit basket on the diffuser. It was easy to manipulate. The tenderloin came out perfect. My WSM was giving me the side eye...

STEbbq the Chimp was not too happy either. But it knows I am lazy so it wasn't quite as jealous. And the Chimp is made for lazy people

"...once I got it to 225-230 it just stayed there." Exactly. I did a whole chicken on it yesterday. It's just so easy to keep temp. Just very minor adjustments every once in a long while. No leaks. Lots of accessories. Industrial grade. Small footprint. What's not to like?

So, assembly is complete, but now I am stuck waiting for the high wind/fire danger/burn ban to pass before I can do the burn in and get to cooking.

I do have one question, how/where does everyone store the hooks and hanging rods? Seems like a lot of sharp pointie objects for me to impale myself with to just leave hanging around...

I store my hooks in a Tupperware container just big enough to fit them. The hangers are stored outside in my old, rusting char- griller. I haven't gotten the heart to pitch it yet. Bummer about the burn ban!

DTro, for all my other cookers I keep most small items is some form of weather proof box and leave them on the shelf under the cooker. I could just put those on one of the other cooker shelves, but I am one of those people that if I don't keep everything that belongs to a specific thing together in one spot I will lose it. It is a true gift.

The hang bars I just leave in their slots. The grill I hang from the handle and leave under the cover. The hooks and such live in a Tupperware container with the rest of the stuff I don’t store outside.

I keep all my accessories for the Bronco in this tote bag from Ryobi. The bag came with my cordless drill, but I keep the drill in my toolbox. The new skewers I bought fit in here also. The hangers will fit, but at an angle.

Haha I just bought a Ryobi tote bag a couple days ago. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...5X7N8GVG&psc=1

        Not quite the same design but it's a pretty good size, 18" x 12" x 12"

Did you buy it to store your Bronco accessories, or for another reason? Just curious.

Damn, I can’t wait to get mine to my own house. I haven’t cooked on that thing near as much as I want to. Only go to Mom’s every other week, and I’ve also got a Weber kettle over there, which I use most of the time. Wanna hang some shish kabobs again, hang a whole chicken, ribs and brisket. Not looking forward to breaking it down though, for the trip in the back of my truck…..😵‍💫

If all goes to plan, I am assembling mine on Sunday and doing the burn in same day. Monday is going to suck bigtime as it is tax deadline day, but Tuesday I am going to do a brisket. Probably not well as I will also be drinking, but I can blame it on it being the inaugural cook in a new smoker.

So, this cook will happen on the SnSK: I could not get the OKJ Bronco above 330 degrees at all, and nothing but white smoke. I need to roast at 375 for this recipe. I'll save the Bronco for low and slow and grilling.

DTro Lump charcoal, some large pieces, for the burn in, vents wide open. Mix of KBB and smaller lump pieces for the attempted cook, vents wide open. I talked with Uncle Bob and I think the problem was I only lit the charcoal in one place, the fire didn't get big enough. Next time I try a hot cook I'll light the charcoal in three places.

klflowers, Panhead John, The winds finally calmed themselves, and I was able to do the burn in with a first cook. Possibly the most juicy chicken I have ever cooked. Although, I wasn't impressed with the super skewers as the chicken was literally sitting on the heat diffuser (I finally just used the hooks to raise it up).. A brisket is next up..

Panhead John, I was cooking at 275 for roughly 4hrs. It was one of the best whole chickens I have cooked, just wished the super skewers had not let the chicken sit on the deflector/shield. Being the kind that can't let well enough alone, I already have plans to shorten the super skewers by 3-4 inches...

Just hang the chicken with hooks. If you spatchcock it, it cooks a bit faster, and hangs beautifully.

      #73
@tstalafuse here's a pic of a solution I used when faced with the same issue you had, it kept the bird a little higher on the skewer. It's a diffuser in my collection. It worked okay, but hooking (2) the chicken through the wishbone would be even higher up.

I am actually contemplating drilling out the nut in the middle of the holder so that the holder can slide up and down the length of the skewer and using a clamp to lock the holder where I want it. I think that would make it more versatile.

      #74
tstalafuse Looks delicious. Nice cook! Last time I cooked a chicken I trussed the drumsticks in the chicken’s own skin and pushed a lemon and onion in the cavity. It kept the bird off of the diffuser. I want to truss with twine next time just for better presentation.
