January Is National Soup Month……hmm 🧐

Hot off the heels of the chili cook-off we just had, I was thinking about some type of group cook we could do for the month of January. Since a lot of us are limited in outdoor cooks because of the freezing and often inclement weather, what better way to do this with another indoor cook everyone can participate in…Show Us Your Soup? AR Soup Smackdown? Not sure what we could call it, any ideas? I didn’t know this, but apparently gumbo is the top national soup here in the United States. It’s definitely one of my favorites. From bisques to chowder and minestrone to French onion…the possibilities are almost endless. Even though our members in other countries might not recognize January as soup month, I’d love to see all of our international members participate and show us…what is one of the favorite soups in your country?

Anyway, I was just wondering what you guys and gals think…..Is this something you’d be interested in doing sometime in January? Along with sharing your recipes for others to try? Not only would beans be allowed, it would actually be encouraged!

Just for the record before the judges get to drunken bickering Gumbo is a soup. Since well known establishments like Antoine’s, Arnaud’s, Commander’s Palace, Galatoire’s and Tujague’s list Gumbo as a soup, I’m adding it to my soup list as John has stated above.

Don, I’m thinking as contentious as some of the judges and committee members can be, we might need to start looking at hiring security for our next meeting…..

Michael, I agree! This would be so interesting seeing what everyone comes up with. There’s literally hundreds of types of soups to choose from, I think we’ll see a huge variety of cooks here.

Oh wow…. I actually put beef barley soup on this weeks menu. And I’m planning on using my last pack of spot prawns for bisque sometime soon. I’m down! (Especially since I had to work during chili cooks).

The homemade beef and vegetable soup I make, has 2 types of beans I use. Fresh green beans and baby Lima beans. Don, a good Navy bean soup is awesome!

Is étouffée a soup?

Dooky Chase’s Restaurant has it listed as a main seafood dish and not under soups as does a few other famous New Orleans restaurants.

Yeah, I agree with Donw, as much as I love etouffe, it’s not a soup.
