A Few Helpful Hacks For Chili

With the 1st annual Pitmaster's Club Virtual Chili Contest looming in the not too distant future I thought I'd share some great chili hacks that hit my inbox from Allrecipes dot com this morning. I think these are game changers, especially for those bland and boring Texas-style chilis:

They still make them, don't they?

OK, cocoa powder and coffee do work but are not necessary. The rest however: 🤮

If I can find it again, I'll post the link to a recent article I read that, among other things, suggested including giardiniera into chili. Never tried it, but it sounded pretty good.

Add chocolate and beef tallow. Those are a couple of easy tricks I use.

I'm unclear, they are talking about beans and tomato sauce. That's not chili.

                Chili beans are too chili.
Chili con carne is chili with meat, also known as chili.
And so are: Chile Con Queso - Mexican Cheese Dip Recipe, Texas Red Chili, Springfield “Chilli”, Cincinnati-Style Chili, Oklahoma-Style Chili, Turkey Chili, Chile Verde, and others.

Eh, Chili doesn't mean just Texas Chili. I can see all of those in the right recipe. Yes, even the pumpkin. You can't think "Geez, if I poured root beer into my Texas Chili it would suck". Of course it would. But add some early on and flavors meld.

It's fine if someone wants to do very traditional stuff, but traditional recipes aren't the only good recipes.

Yeah, but root beer is wintergreen.

Pureed pumpkin is probably a California thing:

As for the root beer thing I'd rather use bourbon. Regardless of all those things.................NO BEANS!! That's satan's work.....................

As long as you use printed "meat" you're good in California.

Can't believe I forgot this one........serve it on the third day! Gives time for them flavors to get to know each other. Everyone knows that chili is best when it is served not he second or third day!

The chocolate and coffee adds….that’s getting towards the mole flavor profile. Can give a nice add to it depending on how one goes with the cook.

Texas Larry most of my commentary here is just jesting. However, the point about Texas style chili being a riff on Boeuf Bourguignon is totally serious. I actually make chili with wine, sometimes, because of that.

Of course ecowper, all of this is in jest. It’s only food! But I guess some folks get serious about it🤣.
