Why Do You Like To BBQ ?

I was working out of town yet again this last week, and on the drive home I started thinking about picking up some prime tri-tip at Costco on the way.

I was talking to someone on the phone and said, "I like BBQing". Then I realized something, one of the things I like most is that it is strangely relaxing. Maybe it is like fishing, or similar to Imelda Marcos shopping for shoes, or whatever.

    So here's my list:

    1. I find it somehow calming.
    2. I get to eat delish meat when it is done, if I don't miss the mark.
    3. Get appreciation and acclaim from other people who get to eat also.
    4. It is a manly pursuit, which is always a good macho topic of conversation at work.

Uh, did I miss anything ?

So, what are the reasons that you like to BBQ ?

    1) I too find it relaxing. I use it as an outlet for stress.
    2) I love playing with fire, so it is always fun to get a fire going.
    3) It brings people together and there is nothing better than making a meal for someone else.

    1. The process
    2. The planning
    3. The cook
    4. The results (most of the time)
    5. The appreciation from those who share in the results
    6. The purpose it gives me

PS: Replace Bake for BBQ same reasons

I agree with what’s been typed so far.

      process and planning
      playing with fire
      the cook
      the results
appreciation from those enjoying the results
I get to take some of the cooking pressure off my wife
it is kind of a manly pursuit

I like 4. My wife won't even look at the cookers. But she sure will reap the benefits. As long as no smoke and cringes if I cook on charcol. How have I stayed married to her for 47 years?

I am retired and therefore have a lot of time available so it’s something rewarding to do. It’s relaxing. I like the planning and organizing required. Last but not least, there is a reward at the end. You get to eat!!

All of the above as well for me. This might sound a little corny, but since I’ve joined AR I enjoy it even more. I’m retired as well, and I have too much time on my hands sometimes. I look forward to seeing other people’s cooks so I can laugh at them and know how superior I am.

Y’all think I’m joking? Let’s see one of you try and duplicate my infamous October 2020 hamburger.

I like experimenting, and sharing what I make with the neighbors and co-workers... they think they are the lucky ones getting free food, I'm the lucky one with the excuse to cook more than my wife and I could ever eat

I’ve never really planned anything in my life.
The process can drive me bonkers.
But when you hit the nail on the head it’s a fantastic feeling
          ....and good eats too!

I agree completely. Planning?? We don't need no stinkin' planning! Just takes even more of the challenge out of it. I can't count the times I began prepping an evening meal before I realized I should have started the day before.

You guys funny and yet, it does ring true for me.

I started smoking because I liked the challenge. There were no "prime" cuts (or I was ignorant to them) when I started. I liked that I could take a cheap hunk of meat that nobody else wanted and make it taste pretty good. I also liked the fact that I could make something on a Saturday or Sunday and my wife could make it last through the week.

When I started I actually distinguished between BBQ'ing and smoking. BBQ'ing was for good meat - about once every month or so I was able to BBQ. It was hot and fast. Smoking was what I did the rest of the time.

Tri-tips were cheap at the time, thus they were smoked. Brisket was cheap but almost impossible to get in CA. When I saw one, I grabbed it and really screwed it up almost every time. It made delicious stew and hash, though. Pork butt and ribs were easy but did not taste nearly as good as they do since joining The Pit.

I became really good at the finished product and had a lot of fun feeding co-workers and the kids and their friends right out of the grill/smoker. The kids have moved out and I am mostly retired.

I BBQ today because it is what I have always done. I enjoy it more from Fall to Spring than I do in the Summer. I have come full circle - I love the leftovers almost as much as I do the original. Tomorrow's tacos, enchiladas, casseroles and soups with BBQ are what I think of when I start now.

            Yo Chicoan !

I'm always trying to extrapolate the recipes to my Traeger smoker grill. I don't think that's the type of smoking you are talking about?

Hot up there in the summer though, no? Do you stay out in the heat to q, or monitor from air conditioned comfort indoors?

zzdocxx - It is hot up here in the summer. I am retired but in the last couple of years I picked up a summer job so I prefer long and slow cooks in the Fall - Spring. Anything I do on my units you could do on the Traeger. When the heat arrives, I just get acclimated so it isn't too bad. Cooking really low and slow during the summer when I have a job takes up my entire day off, though. Once my mortgage is paid off I am back to year-round! Yahoooo

Me, too. Can't imagine how big I would be if I ate Jack-in-the-Box every day. Thank goodness they don't serve beer with the poppers.

Oh boy where do I start. Probably the smell of cherry wood burning with a combo of a spice aroma in the air and having a cocktail puts me at ease. Not to mention a tasty treat at the end. It’s just an over all fun and challenging experience to share with friends and family

Cherry, maybe that's a good reason to use those cherry pellets, just for the smell.

flavor, the whole process, putting smiles on the faces of friends, and of course PBR Tall Boys.
BTW James Crow is credited with inventing sour mash whiskey. Old Crow on the rocks, with PBR Back, and meat in the pellet grill smoking softly. Blue skies and little puffs of white clouds floating by and by.
I'm already looking forward to spring then summer, and covid-19 a thing of the past.

I like to BBQ, but I don’t love BBQ. But I love to cook and I got that from my Mom. She was a great cook. My brother just called me a couple hours ago and asked me how to make Mom’s Chicken n’ Dumplings.

So cooking relaxes me, allows me to kind of drift off into the recipe prep while music plays in the background. It helps to rekindle afresh those old family times in the kitchen and I know that when I’m gone, it will rekindle those special memories for my kids too.
