This evening will be tamales with rice and beans. Tomorrow is whole beef tenderloin on the kamado and some big grilled shrimp. We will again be setting up a dessert table that could give a bear diabetes.

Man NOTHING beat my Grammy's dessert bar. At least 7 pies, at least 3 cookies, several different bar things, 2-3 cakes, cobblers, and 2 different fudges every year. All 100% made from scratch.

texastweeter ours when I was a kid was much the same. It would be a collection of stuff from mom, grandmothers, and aunts. Every flavor of pie with crusts made with lard, so flakey, it was so good! One aunt made a candy called divinity that was white and so light and fluffy wow it was good. Can you say German chocolate cake? Once in a while someone would show up with one of those horrible jello salads but not often.

Divinity!!!! I haven't had it since I was a teenager!!! And Mississippi mud balls (like a cross between fudge, German chocolate cake, brownies, and cake pops). Bother were a favorite of mine as it could go in a sandwich bag and carried the the pocket of my jean jacket while I went and hunted squirrels and rabbits with my cousins.

Ours expanded since the last post. I got some broccoli, and some asparagus. And Mary Joan requested baked spinach artichoke dip. So I offloaded the dip prep, and the broccoli prep. And I got a request for some potato dinner rolls, so those are rising right now.

Christmas lunch looks to be a solid one. I'll double up on my BP meds and go for an extra walk 😉. Hard to beat a Virginia boy.

Tonight is burgers and tots with my oldest son and his wife. Tomorrow is going to be steaks and salad for Lisa and me. Saturday will probably be BBQ in KC with other son.

A 7 lb prime rib. I was going to smoke it, but with rain in the forecast, it’s going in the oven. We’re looking forward to it, it’s been awhile since we cooked one. Merry Christmas to all, and a happy healthy and delicious 2026!

Our plan was to travel to San Diego to spend Christmas with the family. However, with 5-9 inches of rain in the forecast and an evacuation warning for floods and mudslides, we cancelled travel plans and flyingpiglet and I will be hunkering down at home tonight and tomorrow. Fortunately, we have fixings in the freezer for seafood and sausage gumbo tonight and oxtails for a wonderful ragu tomorrow.

Panhead John - We’ve received 5.5 inches of rain since Tuesday night. More expected today. Our house is doing fine so far, but there are lots of flooded roads and some mudslides around the city. The gumbo was fine (see SUWYC).

surfdog. - Absolutely. And we're lucky we have a reasonably well provisioned freezer. Hope you are all doing well where you are.

Well, I’ve had to flex a little on the menu. Unfortunately my Oma is coming off the flu, which my dad also came down with. So, it has changed Christmas for us quite a bit. No New Mexican Christmas menu for today - going with bolognese instead and tomorrow I’m scaling down to a little more simple. Tri tip, mashed green chile potatoes and beans. Will be great, but sad to not have my parents and Oma around with us. First Christmas where we haven’t been together…but we do have the kiddos so I am thankful for that! Merry Christmas everyone!

Sorry to hear that. The flu messed up our Christmas as well, taking 1/3 of the kids and 3/4 of the grandkids out of the mix.

Well we had our Christmas celebration with our son and his family at his house yesterday. He made homemade gyros with all the trimmings. He even made the meat slices from scratch. Forgot to take pics. We were all starving. 🤷‍♂️

Today and tomorrow me and the wifey are alone. Tonight we had Stouffer’s frozen lasagna and store bought garlic/cheese bread. 🙄🤦‍♂️. Actually, I added a bunch of extra cheese and it was pretty good. Certainly nothing like homemade. Not photo worthy though.

Tomorrow for breakfast it’s cold smoked salmon on bagels with cream cheese, thinly sliced raw onions, capers, salt, pepper. We’ll snack throughout the day. Then a store bought fully prepared ham dinner with all the sides. We did this for T-Day with turkey and it was excellent, affordable, and sooooo easy.

I know. I’m risking my membership in The Pit by admitting all this. But I’m old and lazy over the holidays in recent times. Please be kind. 🤦‍♂️

That ham dinner sounds delicious to me! When I think about your meal it sounds better than going to a restaurant and everyone would think of that as being a special treat. Enjoy your Christmas Day!
