Okra is similar to nopales in that the slime goes away when it's cooked. I wouldn't eat it when I was little but I look forward to it when it's in season.
I guess my favorite way to eat it is cooked with stewed tomates and onions and served over white rice, topped with crumbled bacon.
Catfish can be sublime if caught in clean water.

Okra is delicious fried (sliced and battered first), add a little salt and ketchup on the side. I love fried catfish. Black eyed peas are delicious with stewed tomatoes. We eat that on New Year's with collard greens and cornbread. Okra can also be used as a vegetable addition in a stew for thickening. It needs to be sliced, never whole. Left whole it's slicker than goose sh*t. Gross.

No! But I would eat every last morsal of that meal in a heartbeat Brother! My MUST VISIT restaurant in Las Vegas, NV is none other than The Hushpuppy. And the meal chosen is the All You Can Eat Catfish with jalapeno hush puppys and do not forget the fried green tomatoes.Originally posted by Oak Smoke View PostIs it customary to eat such things where you live?

- If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
We eat all 3 of those in Alabama and Georgia. When I was a kid in Georgia okra was always in our rather large garden (which I hated weeding!). Black eyed peas are a southern staple, and a MUST eat on New Year's Day (for luck), along with collard or turnip greens for wealth.Last edited by jfmorris; September 2, 2022, 01:20 PM.
