In eastern NC, where I grew up, they'll eat about anything, including Tom Thumb. I've eaten all of what you listed but I'm not a fan of black eyed peas or catfish.

We get okra regularly at the supermarket here in the suburbs of Boston. It's delicious pan-fried. Don't see much catfish though. Perhaps that's because sea-food is readily available and popular (but increasingly expensive.)

Love them all. The catfish (unless you caught them yourself) served in restaurants or purchased in stores is most likely from an aquaculture pond. They are fed catfish chow which is mainly soybean meal.

Back when I was scuffling I used to make a pot of black eyed peas using dried beans, rice, an onion, and a ham bone. I’d make a pot and eat it every day for a week, with hot sauce.

As long as its not "muddy" tasting I am down. I don't eat stuff outta rivers in the lower 48 because most of the river systems by me are so polluted with Ag run off and 3M that I would not eat anything out of them. The Minnesota River is close but the grocery store is closer.

When I go out west to fish the rivers, I would eat the trout but I am more of a conservationist out there. Trout are too beautiful and too few end up on my plate. I can always run to the store for some fresh fish if I want it. Plus a Tri-tip when camping is better anyway.

As for Okra, I always get fried okra when I visit my brother in TEXAS. I never get it in MN, mostly casue its just not around. And it makes it more special when I go down to visit Jeff and crush some BBQ.

I learned a trick from my dad. He was a year round cat fisherman. According to him the fat on a catfish is pink and the muscles are white. If you get all the fat off the dirty taste leaves with it.

Catfish definitely. I've had good and bad okra so maybe. I had an uncle from Iowa that didnt eat corn because it was pig food...

Growing up in rural northern California we had a lot Dust Bowl/Depression immigrants from Oklahoma and Texas. Some of my closest friends were the children and grandchildren of those folks so naturally these kinds of foods were a regular part of having supper at their homes. Southern fried chicken, grits for breakfast/lunch/dinner, salt pork, steamed greens, and it seemed like everything had an egg on it. Some of it was strange to my tastebuds at first, but since most of it was fried and drowned in milk gravy you learned to love it real fast! Man, I can taste Elva Jones' milk gravy right now!!

I LOVE fried catfish, in fact (except appropriately made fish n chips) it's my preferred fried fish. My favorite fish are tuna, trout, or salmon but I like those grilled or baked/smoked.

I also really enjoy okra, not something we really had in CA or NV growing up, but once I was introduced I love it... but it's gotta be right. Some places do it slimy and I'm not about that.

Black eyed peas I'm indifferent to. I'll eat 'em, but I just prefer other sides more.

Growing up Italian in the Chicago area, never even heard of eating Catfish, Okra or Black Eyed Peas. Not until I was 19 and in the Air Force at Lackland and Wichita Falls TX did I hear of such things. My buddies from the south kind of educated me on southern fare. I never heard of Chicken Fried Steak either. But then again my buddies from the south never ate Gnocchi, Baked Clams, good Pizza, or even a decent Lasagna, Let alone a Pork Ragu'. I BBQ'd up som Chicago Style Sausage, Peppers, Beans and Potatoes like my Mom made. They didn't know what to make of it...But we had fun and drank a lot of beer. Success all the way around.

We eat catfish often but don't fry it very often, keeps the doctor happy. Love the okra from my wife's gumbo, it's perfect. Growing up in MI you could eat all the fish you wanted as long as it was fried. Took moving out of MI to understand there is a whole world out there that doesn't fry fish.

First time we went to Charleston SC and we went to Hyman's Seafood and they would serve it blackened with crab meat and hollandaise sauce on top...OMG...I was hooked (so to speak).

Ended up in Panama City Beach for 15 years and had a 27' Pro-Line with all the goodies. Always had fish in the freezer and got a little spoiled. Our favorite locals spot now is in Melbourne FL and they do a dynamite blackened tuna wrap that we love too. I could go on an on.

okra. I've had it a few times. don't love it, don't hate it.
black eyed peas are gross...as are all bean like substances 🤢
Maybe if they were battered and fried 🤷‍♂️

Love me some fried okra! And Hoppin’ John isn’t right without black-eyed peas! Catfish is fine in my book. Don’t care much for "innards." No liver or tripe for me. Don’t like octopus. I will pick and eat two dozen steamed crabs, which some people find kinda gross. Speaking of which, if you have never seen a Maryland crab feast, you need to experience it once in your life. 😜

Look up Sean Brock's recipe for Hoppin' John. It's true to the original colonial version. I made using Sea Island Red Peas from Marsh Hen Mills in South Carolina.

It will amp up your experience many fold.
