    Will you eat that?

We ordered a to go dinner of fried catfish, hush puppies, French fries, and fried okra the other night. My word it was so good. I can only handle an all fried meal like that once in a while. It brought up a memory that really has stuck with me. My aunt married a man from Michigan. He was a career military man and the most clean cut, physically fit man I had ever met. He would not eat catfish because they were scavengers or okra or black eyed peas because they were cow feed. Is it customary to eat such things where you live?

Okra isn't big up here in MI unless you were from a southern area or have learned about it and developed a love for it from someone who is. I happen to love it (my wife was born in Oakridge, TN and raised there and FL until teen yrs) but good luck finding okra in the average grocery store here. As far as catfish and the whole 'bottom feeder' thing, ALL animals are disgusting in their habits, name one that isn't. Hogs are vile. And we're slicing up their muscle and cooking it. That's gross if you think about it too long. So I say eat what tastes good, and fried catfish with cornmeal is awesome!

I don't eat fish, but if I did I would eat catfish without blinking. Okra and black eyed peas are both great.

All I get at Chicken Express is the 3 piece Catfish dinner with 2 sides of fried okra. It has some hush puppies and no drink.

Jerod Broussard The meal we ordered was from Chicken Express. They gutted and remodeled our Chicken Express. We were without one for nearly a year. I love their sweet ice tea. That just makes it a true southern experience.

Oak Smoke my second wife made sweet tea daily, after three
kidney stones I realized tea does a great job of Calculi Manufacturing. Generally on Sundays the line is wrapped back to the road

No to catfish, sometimes yes to fried okra, that's about it. Don't really care for black eyed peas.

Nothing about them being unfit, I just don't like them.

        And Miracle Whip.... ugh.

I think y’all will know my answer….hell yeah! I love fried catfish, okra and hush puppies. Even though I rarely have hush puppies or black eyed peas, I do like em. I like my fried okra with lots of salt and…..a little ketchup on the side. All of that is a well known and popular dish in the South.

You need to try my Hoppin’ John Jambalaya. You will eat more black eyed peas. What is gumbo without okra?

A buddy & I had a deep fry night inspired by alocohol consumption and my favorite experiment by far was Oreos in pancake batter. Essentially turned into delicious Oreo-flavored donut holes.

Let's just say that by the time I was 11 or 12, I knew to wear long sleeves to pick the okra in my grandfather's garden. And he and my father did LOTS of fishing for catfish. We ate some black eyed peas then but I've become a really big fan of them lately.

Okra isn't a thing in Indiana and we all know it grows well down south. A thing I just learned about a year ago is that okra is a natural thickener, meaning you can add it to soups and stews to join the fat and water soluble stuff together to make it thicker. Apparently it's sometimes the thickening agent in gumbo?

The thickening agent in gumbo is adding more flour than oil to the roux. To me anyway, adding okra to gumbo doesn’t make it thicker, just more crowded. Personally, as much as I love okra, I never add it to my gumbo. I don’t like okra in my gumbo.

I like okra in just about anything. I'm much hated in these parts and on social media because I like to put thin slices of okra on pizza. It roasts beautifully.

That whole meal sounds great to me, and yes, it is customary to eat that stuff here. And give me all of the black eyed peas!

          I grew up eatin' catfish.
I can eat BEPs, but not a real fan.
Not much for okra either. That may be my Grandfather's fault though. He once said that stewed okra was so slippery that if ya ate it, it would be in the chair when ya got up.

Okra isn’t slimy when done right. I don’t know if I’ve ever had slimy okra.

When we make gumbo we use either okra or filet to thicken it. No I don’t like boiled okra, if I’m going to eat something that slick I want an oyster.

Fried okra is a great southern dish with fried catfish and black-eyed peas. On New Year's Day, black eyed peas were always eaten for good luck with corn bread, greens, raw onion, sweet tea, etc. Okra in gumbo and stews is okay. BUT never, never slimy pickled okra. Pickled okra is right there with the vegetable from hell, Brussel Sprouts! Always had to pick okra with a long sleeve shirt on and with gloves.

People embrace food myths, among other reasons, because they give them an illusory sense of control over their mortality, which scares the shit out of them. Any fish, given the choice between burning calories to chase live prey or eating something dead that requires no energy expenditure will go with the dead meal every single time.

Okra and black-eyed peas are a staple here as well. I grill my okra, and it is never slimy.

For anyone a little on the fence about okra, this stuff is pretty dang good. It’s a mixture of corn, okra and tomatoes with a little onion. A real southern style dish for sure.
