Nah, writers at places like BI are judged, in part, on traffic they generate. What's going to generate more traffic, a nice historical review of BBQ or... that post, on the weekend of the 4th? It's a pretty bad take. The one thing he doesn't seem to acknowledge is that smokey flavor that grills produce. Very hard to duplicate that in a kitchen especially when compared with charcoal.
That flavor is technically a spice. I guess a talented cook can attempt to replicate it using liquid smoke...
