I was thinking last night about what to cook this weekend. Weather is going to be kinda' crappy and wet and want to cook indoors. Then it dawned on me, why not some incredible, best you ever had hot dogs? We don't eat hot dogs much at all and thought this would be really fun. I want to make the best, from the bun to the wiener to the toppings and chili. What is your absolute favorite brand of dog? Here in NC, we use Bright Leaf packers hot dogs which aren't my favorite. They are nuclear red and really just don't excite me. I like Nathan's but want some expert opinions from folks in hot dog country like up north, western and mid-western. Even if you aren't in those areas please chime in. What is your favorite bun and who makes it? Lastly, the hot dog chili. Do you have a tried and true outstanding hot dog chili recipe you'd like to share or point me to? Looking forward to everyone's input!

Sorry, you KNOW an eastern NC boy is doing Bright Leaf...with every meal...no matter what else we're smoking/grilling. ;-) We do love some Nathan's as well though or even good ol' Oscar Meyer IF they need to be "brown" hot dogs. As for chili; my wife REQUIRES me to use her mom's hot dog chili recipe:
2# ground beef
1 medium onion diced
1 packet Frech's Chili-O
24 oz Ketchup
2 tbsp yellow mustard
Brown beef. Add onions and French's Chili-O and mix well. Add ketchup & mustard and mix well. Add 24 oz water and stir occasionally while bringing to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for an hour (or until the consistency you like). I usually reduce the water to 16 oz or simmer for about 1.5-2 hours to get the consistency I like.Last edited by gdean44; May 18, 2023, 01:47 PM.

Oh I know eastern NC hot dog cuisine all too well my homie. Went to college in Wilson and my first wife is from Elm City. Whole hog pig pickin' central. We used to have bonfires and put some Bright Leaf red hots on big sticks, roast them over the flames. Easy eating with ice cold Natural Light my brother. Thanks for the hot dog chili recipe, that one is going in the books!

1, Viena beef, natural casing,
2. Feltman's.beef, natural casing,
2. Nathan's.beef natural casing.
There are others that all coalesce around the top 10 and most are faily decent. There are only a few I really dislike enough to say no to.
Unless I'm having a Vienna Chicago Dog, the bun isn't all that important. It is merely there to hold the dog and any toppings together while it gets to the mouth. I wan't it to be neutral. Spicy Deli mustard and chopped yellow onion is all I need. Ketchup get's you a seat with the kids, who can be excused for using it on the dog.

My go to recently is Snake River Farms hotdogs. Wife likes Boarshead beef franks in natural casing. Good beef, good snap. I really liked Feltman’s, but the brand is now owned by some marketing firm and delivery has become a challenge. There are some specialty Kobe beef dogs out there - just can’t recall the brands. I see them at our local Sprouts market.
Buns are a tough call as most stores have stopped carrying the longer white buns. There is brand of brioche buns, but my wife didn’t like the flavor, so we’re using deli rolls these days.

Favorite hot dog:
1. Hebrew National
2. Vienna
3. Nathan’s
4. I’ll have peanut butter and jelly, thanks for the offer
Roll: Rosen’s with poppy seeds.
Condiments: mustard, onion, relish, pickle, sport peppers, celery seed. If you like tomatoes, sure, go ahead. Ketchup is only for the 5 and under set.
Chili: on the side.
What, me a hot dog snob? Yep. And proud of it.Last edited by Draznnl; May 18, 2023, 06:54 PM. Reason: Reason for edit 2: because I always confuse poppy and sesame seeds. Which also gets me in trouble when ordering my wife’s bagels.

I’ve tried Nathan’s and Hebrew National, they are good. The sad thing is I want a hotdog that tastes like we had growing up.. I won’t use the ones so cheap that they turn the water red although my mom did. I’m just as happy as I can be with BallPark beef bun length. We usually throw them on the grill for a couple of minutes to get just a bit of char on them.

Actually, I like ANY hot dog. It’s kind of like pizza. There is NO bad pizza and NO bad hot dogs. At least to me anyway. 😬
Lately I have been buying my hot dogs from Wild Fork. Jumbo all beef. They’re really good IMO.

HN or Nat's at home (or house made from a local butcher). However, I had the same hankerin' a couple of days ago while out here in PA and grabbed a pack of Sabrett's. It'll be fine dining on red hots and tater tots tonight here at Camp Hambone next to the Gettysburg battlefield. Unless I'm jumped by some Johnny Reb from 'ol Bobby Lee's Army of Northern Virginia!

Donw I think that's where the high school baseball field is now. In the museum I saw that Eisenhower taught tank tactics at Camp Colt. I'm sure he fell in love with the place then and bought property there when he could. I tell ya, after driving by the artillery placements on Seminary Ridge I see why Lee was so confident. That was a killing field, though not the one he hoped for.

I've never tried these because the price seems pretty ridiculous but they are supposed to taste like steak.

I guess I'm going to be the odd man out, but we like Sabrats! I don't eat many hot dogs, but when we are at camp, it isn't uncommon (for me) to have a grilled hot dog with sauerkraut, Mister Mustard, chopped red hot cherry peppers or sambal oelek with a beer for breakfast. What happens at camp, stays at camp
