    uses for Aebleskiver

    OK, as it happens:

When you want cake but the igniter of the oven is broken. Aebleskiver pan, Stovetop Cake Balls!!

a little pancake batter in the pan, let it begin cooking to set the outer shell, then drop in meats, veg & cheese to make little dinner bites. think Taco seasoned meat with tomato & cheddar. Pepperoni w/ olive, mush & tomato, Italian sausage and cheese with spices. A little cornbread batter, in to set the bottom, then add a tablespoon of leftover BBQ.

any combo is possible, to make little bites of any meal. flipped to create a ball or just a half circle, whichever you prefer.

What can you guys think of?

I thought we were the only people on the planet with an Aebleskiver pan. I've never made anything outside the realm of traditional Aebleskivers with ours. There's no doubt you're imagination is the only thing holding you back from anything made in the pan. I would make mini rye flats in them (let's say 1 tablespoon of rye dough pressed into each cup, then par baked in the pan. Top with a mixture of sauerkraut, Russian dressing, creamed chipped beef and shredded swiss cheese for mini Reuben's. I'm a mustard freak so I'd probably put a little of Trader Joe's Dijon mustard which is the best you can buy in this country. (Maille sold in the U.S. is made in Canada and not nearly as good as in France).

Naw. We had two for awhile - I inherited one, and my wife inherited one. We gave the better looking one to the next generation down. And, I agree on the TJ Dijon. THX, Karon, for starting this thread - I'll be using ours early next week for a family bkfst.

Karon Adams, (don) Jr, Eunice (Wife) has a Pan, I walk arround it With Caution, I have enough lumps on My Head? Memory serve don't you heat These Pans inverted and dip the dimples into the Dough? Eunice assures me it's a Pipedream but She's been Wrong Before!

Æbleskiver ("apple slices") are normally sweet ... but savory is an interesting twist. Good thinking, Karon!

What a great idea! My wife is a good Norwegian and makes aebelskivers pretty frequently for a big Sunday breakfast. The kids much prefer them to pancakes and have fun helping. Which works for me, cause then no one feels the need to come outside and "help" me with the pork butt or ribs.

you can do little omelet balls, too. mix some pancake batter, then take an egg and beat it, add in sausage, bacon, cheese, onions, peppers, whatever you like on your omelet. put a little pancake batter in the well, let it set just a bit, then puor your egg in the center, allowing it to displace the batter so you create a bit of a bread shell, let it finish cooking and, omelet rounds. If you are cooking something and you need heat from the top, again, no need to fire up the oven, use another piece of cast iron. use a small skillet, my little ones fit just right and heat it over the eye next to your aebleskiver. once you have your things in the wells of the aeble pan, turn your skillet upside down and put it over the aeble pan. viola, stovetop oven.

Last time we were in Solvang, a Danish village a bit south of us, we bought some aebleskivers. Talk about gut bombs! Tasty as all get-out, but they sure do stick to your ribs. I kept asking my wife if we should but a pan, but she declined my generous offer. Maybe with all these suggestions, next time we go down there I can convince her that it is a good idea.

imagine the way neat kinds of appetizers or even hand foods. I can understand the stick to your ribs. they do make a dense starch. I like my stove top aebleskiver cake bites but, because they have to be disturbed and turned, they don't rise the way a normal cake does. so, the finished product has less air and is a more dense bite. not a bad thing, just a different thing.

I love Chinese steamed buns as a way to use my left over BBQ. can you see the bun cooked in the aeblseksiver pan? yummy as the steamed bun but with a browned outside. I think I am going to do that this week. we are doing a butt tonight. so, I'll make up the bun dough Monday or Tuesday. instead of steaming them, I'll cook some in the pan. I'll take some pics and let you guys know how it comes out.
