    Grandma's Holiday Green Salad

She probably got this from one of her church ladies or a magazine article, but this is the "salad" my grandmother made every year for Christmas

    Holiday Green Salad

    Ingredients

    1 pckg lime jello
    1/2 cup chopped celery
    1 cup diced pineapple
    1/2 cup walnuts
    1/2 mashed up avocado
    1 cup whipped cream

    Directions

Prepare and chill jello until firm
Mix jello, celery, pineapple, walnuts, avocado together in a bowl
Then prepare 1 cup whipped cream and stir in.
    Chill at least 1 hour

    Notes

Can use Cool Whip if desired. Grandma did. She used canned pineapple, as well.

This definitely sounds like something from the 50s/early 60s. Jello, a veggie or two, and nuts. It was the law back then.

Can’t say jello and celery is ever a combination I want to try. Leave the celery out and it might not be bad

You might be surprised …. Celery has basically no flavor, but lots of crunch

I've never seen such a thing, and still haven't.....

Oh, I suffered through a few jello salad versions our mom would foist on us. I swear, I wretch at the mere thought of a Mandarin orange encased in a translucent citric acidy solidified gelatinous goo. But, what I was really wondering is what Grandma's Holiday Green Salad actually looks like?

And I do recall having something like this that wasn't too bad.

CaptainMike I will post a picture next week. For the life of me, I cannot find a picture of it.

Thanks for posting the recipe Eric. If nothing else, it helps prove the theory that even the most competent among us go off the deep end sometimes.

If Grandma made it, there is no question it was good!

You bring back memories of a few "Jello Salads" that had vegetables included. To me they are definitely 50s & 60s sides from Home. I wonder what our Grandchildren will say when they are older? Fun post ecowper!

There were lots of Jello based salads when I was a kid. I don't remember any reasons why I didn't eat them. Plain Jello was a common dessert because it was cheap and easy.

I still make ambrosia salad, which is a throwback to what my grandmother made for holiday meals. It's a guilty pleasure for me. Husband won't touch the stuff. He says it scares him

I've never made a jello salad in my life. But I trust your taste buds, Eric. They haven't steered me wrong yet.

I may try this because the use of avocado is a surprise for an old timey salad. My mother never served avocados in any shape or form. I never even saw one IRL until I went away for college.

The salad should be fun to make, providing something jiggly and green on the Christmas dinner table...as if The Grinch is on the guest list.

Ha ha. With our older daughter's new significant other, we now have ambrosia at family holiday meals. His mother brings it. I have to admit I've gotten back to enjoying it

fzxdoc the Jello for you to try is Lime Flavored with Pears Added. It's my favorite! We have it a few times per year.

I can see dropping the pineapple and adding more avocado, chopped sun-dried tomatoes, sour cream and cilantro. A solid guacamole salad!

CaptainMike I finally found a picture of the Holiday Green Salad (which is what was written on her recipe card), so I've kept the name and just added Grandma to it :-)

It is the forward most food dish on the table.

Back in the day, the MIL used to serve something very similar on special occasions. For some reason, it had been dubbed "Green Death" by my wife and her brother/sisters as little kids. The name stuck ...

This is absolutely something my grandmother made. I know hers didn’t have avocado, and I don’t recall any celery, but the rest is spot on.

Not planning to make any, but it sure brings back some good memories!
