What a day on the work site! It started with some carpenters doing a bit more trim work. Before they finished, the painters showed up. Then, after the carpenters left and a bit further into the day, the electricians showed up. At one point, there were three painters and three electricians going hard at it. The best thing is that since these subs spend most of their time working for the same general contractor, they all know each other and get along really well. Lots of good banter and laughing. I'm really lucky and this just shows what a good contractor I was steered to.

      So here's the outside view:

The white paint is the same off-white we have inside the house. I chose that to have continuity. There will be quite a bit of color on the furniture, so don't worry about drab. And those of you with sharp eyes will note that on the columns, there's a stripe of brown on the outside and white on the inside. The junction between them will be obscured by the aluminum frames for the screen when it's installed. I chose white for the frames.

Sounds like tile work won't start until Thursday, as there's more electrical and painting tomorrow. Cabinet installation is set to start next Wednesday and I've scheduled hot tub delivery for next Thursday, just before I jump on the plane at oh-dark-thirty Friday morning for the Meat Up.

The tile guys went with extremely narrow spacing and I chose a grout color to match the medium gray in the tile. This is the same tile we did in the master bath. It's even in our shower floor, so we've had several months to experience just how non-slip this tile is even when it's wet. It's designed for pool surrounds, so it's perfect for the porch with it's hot tub.

The grout needs to dry overnight and then tomorrow the dogs get to move back onto the porch. They will be so excited. We are still on track for starting to set cabinets on Wednesday.

Can’t tell if that is a dance hall or a skating rink! 😁

Would you consider subletting that space for a week? It would make a terrific retreat. Asking for a friend.

            < record scratch >

You're probably wondering how I got here, standing under a hot tub that is about to topple off a forklift onto the road in front of my house. Well, despite my nearly reaching for my cardiologist on speed dial, things worked out. I was confounded that the hot tub was shipped on its side, but I'm told that's not very uncommon. Sure looked scary to me.

And then when the whole thing started to topple, all I could think about was the 8 to 10 week lead time for a new one. Well that, and the safety of the driver, myself and any passing vehicles with really unfortunate timing.

But here is proof it safely went from truck to back yard.

The poor driver really struggled, but took his time and made sure it all worked out. Even though I had to provide a hand here and there in the process of reorienting the crate on the forklift, I still gave him a good cash tip since he spent a whole hour and a half on site to get it right.

Oh, and I'll document further later, but in the process of setting the cabinets, it turns out I messed up my math when I confirmed the length of the knee wall that extends from the outer wall to separate the kitchen from the hot tub. It only has to be extended another 29 inches to be right. Have I mentioned lately that I'm an idiot? At least there's a good chance this will be my only change order on the whole job. And the contractor is not at all phased by the hot tub situation.

Is it time for Meat Up yet? I need a drink.

29"? About one cabinet width.............................close enough for government work.

Yup, Uncle Bob. And the interesting thing is that it makes the kitchen part more symmetrical. I should have noticed that much earlier, because the initial plan from the cabinet folks had it that way. Problem is that we moved some stuff around and there were a lot of moving pieces in my coming up with a number before any of the walls were built. But yeah, I messed up big time or missed sending one message. Not worth worrying about, though.

Okay, so not all the cabinets are set and finished yet, especially with the error, but it's already looking fantastic, Here is the cabinet that will sit next to the fridge and sink unit, which is next in line:

For scale, keep in mind that the opening at the back is 48 inches and is where the LSG Adjustable will live.

The sink and the corner units have stainless tops and the other pieces will have the granite you see on the one by the fridge.

And the update from the hot tub vendor is that he is sending a crew early next week to get the tub off its side and then my contractor's folks will get it into place and wired up.

While I was at the Meat Up, they finished setting the cabinets (as well as they could given the wall that was a bit too short). Today, the carpenters returned. They extended the low wall dividing the kitchen from the hot tub area and they filled in the area behind the corner cabinets so that things can't fall into the gap. The cabinet sit 12 inches from the back wall so that their fronts will align with the front of the cart for the LSG Adjustable with enough swing space for the lid not to hit the screen.

This also provided a back on the shelves where they had no back.

This afternoon the refrigerator was delivered. Things are starting to get a more finished look.

That's coming together nicely. I'd be tempted to have an end panel and overhead cabinet with roll out shelves built around the refrigerator for an even more finished look and useful space. You can never have too much storage.
