So what are you going to do for Saturday afternoon recreation? A cave isn’t going to top the Air Boat swamp tour.

Couldn’t find any swamps nearby…..🥸 I’m gonna do the cave tour myself anyway, but yeah, that swamp tour was great!

How can you pass up tubing the Guadalupe with all the drunk college kids? Those Cajuns didn’t really know how to party.

Add Renee and me to the list. We will be commuting from San Antonio for at least some of the festivities. Might miss out on the midnight costumed pillow fight though🤣.

58limited Hey David, do you think we should start the attendance roster soon? I think we’ve got 8 or 9 folks so far, some will be attending but not staying at the hotel.

OK, the attendance roster is posted. Please let em know if I left you off or if I need to correct the number of attendees in your party.

Panhead John Can you go back and link this in your original first post?

Here is the roster for the Texas Spring Meat-up in San Marcos, April 18-21 at the Homewood Suites. 2024 TEXAS HILL COUNTRY MEATUP ITINERARY…….

    THURSDAY APRIL 18:
After checking into our rooms we normally meet downstairs for a Happy Hour of Coors Light beers 😳….or whatever you like to drink. Usually around 4:30 or so to 6:30 pm. It has become a tradition on our MeatUps to have Mexican Food and Margaritas for dinner on Thursday night! It’s a nice change of pace from a full weekend of BBQ. I found a great little Mexican place online called Mana’s Restaurant in San Marcos. It gets consistently good Google reviews, so I thought this could be a possibility. After dinner we go back to the hotel for more drunken revelry. When we see the cops drive up, we normally just all scatter and head to our rooms for the night.

Friday April 19: The hotel has a complimentary hot breakfast if you’re interested and we all meet in the lobby for coffee, usually around 8-9 am. This is when we normally finalize our lunch plans for the day. Troutman has posted here previously a great list and map, of the top BBQ places worthy of a visit. Feel free to visit just one for lunch, or visit several places, your choice. And remember, anyone flying in for this, we’ll have plenty of folks with vehicles you can ride with.

Friday Dinner: Most of the top BBQ places close in the early afternoon after they sell out, and dinner time meals aren’t served. Something we’ve done a few times is have pizza delivered to the hotel for everyone…..who doesn’t like pizza!? We just decide on a good pizza place that delivers, discuss our favorite toppings and order several large pizzas. This is great because it means no one has to drive anywhere. Some folks will have leftover BBQ from lunch and eat on that. Anyway, these are just suggestions and you’re free to eat wherever you like…

    SATURDAY APRIL 20:
This is normally just a repeat of Friday morning…..coffee and discuss our lunch plans. We’ve had several people interested in visiting the Natural Bridge Caverns and doing the cave tour. I think Saturday after lunch, maybe 2:00 - 3:00 or so would be a good time for that. It’s only about 38 miles from San Marcos, but we can make our final plans for this on Friday. texastweeter has also suggested a visit to Gruene Hall would be a neat visit! Built in 1878, Gruene Hall is the oldest dance hall in Texas. I’ll let him take the lead on when to visit for the folks interested, I’ve definitely heard of it before, but I’ve never been there. I have no clue what we can do for Saturday night dinner, any suggestions? We can also just play it by ear if ya want and decide on Saturday.

SUNDAY APRIL 21: Most of us will be checking out and leaving, but we usually say our goodbyes downstairs over coffee, or the night before if you’re leaving early in the morning.

There were several people who have mentioned “wanting to attend or might attend”. Has anyone that was thinking about it decided yet? We’ve still got rooms left! Anyway folks, I’m really looking forward to this one, gonna see some old friends and meet some new ones….

Looking at the plan, I think I’m going to tentatively plan on meeting y’all at the hotel Friday morning and hang out until after lunch. Then go back to my mom’s place in the afternoon.

Alrighty folks, only a month till the MeatUp…… Gonna be a good time fer sho! I’d like to get an idea of how many folks would like to go on the Natural Bridge Caverns walking cave tour. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour. It’s definitely a feast for the eyes! I’d like to call ahead and give them an idea of how many people we’ll have. I’m thinking we should do it on Saturday, maybe around 2-3. That would give us plenty of time to finish our lunch and head over their way. We could also be through with the tour and back at the hotel for the Happy Hour festivities. Remember, nothing gets in the way of our drinking! 🤓 So here’s what I’d like to know from everyone going….
Are you interested in going on the cave tour? Yes…….No

    Thanks!

I just called Natural Bridge Caverns and got the scoop on how it works. Unless we have a group of 20 or more, which I doubt we will, we don’t need reservations or advance notice. There’s no need to commit to going now, we can just buy our tickets, $29.50 each, when we arrive or you can buy online. The tours start about every 10-40 minutes and last about 75 minutes. She said since schools are still in session at that time, it shouldn’t be very crowded for our date. I asked which tour has the bigger “wow” factor and she recommended the Discovery Tour. So anyone who is on the fence about the tour, you can actually decide the day of if you wish. That’s all, carry on!

Whoa! Time flies... The parents aren't going to be ready to move back to Texas by April, so it looks like I will not be in the vicinity for this year's Texas meetup.

I'll look towards the next meetup and see if I can make it.

      Y'all have fun!

FREE STUFF FOR ANYONE GOING TO THE MEATUP NEXT WEEK…
I’ve got a few things I’ll never use anymore and all of it is in very good to excellent condition. It’ll be free for anyone attending the MeatUp and I can bring it with me if you’re interested. I’d rather give it to a good home than throw it out. And it’s not worth trying to sell any of it online. I recently bought a larger sautee pan and a new kitchen scale, so I don’t need these anymore. If more than one person wants any particular item, we’ll do a drawing, flip a coin or something at the MeatUp. If you’re interested in anything just let me know, thanks.

I have that same scale and I just bought a 3qt saute pan. I have some mixing bowls but you can never have enough so if no one else wants the bowls I'll take them but let others have first choice.

I’ll take the scale too, but if someone else wants it, it’s theirs. I have one, but it’s taken a beating and I wouldn’t be surprised if it died on me soon.

I know texastweeter and Panhead John mentioned this in a post above but I want to repeat it:

For those new to Texas and wanting a real Texas experience you might want to catch some music and beer at Gruene Hall just down the road from San Marcos in New Braunfels. Gruene Hall has been open since 1878. Nearby is the Gristmill restaurant, a good restaurant built in and around the ruins of an old Cotton Gin on the bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River.

Located beneath Gruene’s landmark water tower, in the ruins of an 1878 cotton gin, overlooking the Guadalupe River, the Historic Gristmill has been considered one of the most unique dining spots in Texas for nearly half a century.

I haven't heard the bands playing Friday and Saturday but, dang, I wish the Meat Up was the first week in May when Band of Heathens is playing. Plus Red Shahan and Hayes Carll in June and Gary P. Nunn in July. Wish I lived closer.
