Even though PJ didn't keep his word, we were able to get our choice of preferred accommodation. Three nights for me and the bride. BTW, Halle Berry is the name of our friend's Weimaraner, just so you know...................
Just got my tickets! Flying in on Thursday and leaving early Monday. As the itinerary is created I’ll let y’all know what I will join in on! Southwest has an amazing deal right now with promo code wow. Got two way for under $200 from Chicago Midway! Flights leave at about 5:30am both times, but that’s worth it to me.

The largest of 3 airports in Austin is Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. For anyone flying in to the MeatUp, this would be my recommendation over flying into San Antonio. As I mentioned above, Austin is only about 30 miles from San Marcos, vs 50 miles from San Antonio. From using the Google machine, an average Uber ride from Austin to San Marcos would be about $49. - $59. one way. So you’d save time and money by flying into Austin.
I mentioned this before, but if you’re flying in and don’t rent a car but maybe use Uber or Lyft to get to and from San Marcos, you will have free transportation once you get there. There will be plenty of friendly Texas Pit Members in our own vehicles to take you everywhere we go.

You should put Gruene on the tourist list. We love it there, should look and see who is playing at historic Gruene hall. Can hear the concerts from our balcony on the river.
One place that piqued my interest was a new BBQ joint that opened last year in Lockhart. It opened to rave reviews and long lines, plus it’s owned by 3 women who worked at, get this, Franklin’s BBQ and Goldee’s BBQ! Two of the best BBQ spots on the planet. Anyway here’s a link to a Texas Monthly article about the women and their restaurant……It’s close to where we’ll be at the MeatUp.
I wanted to take John's highlight above and expand on the possibilities. Of course I'll leave it to the "Executive Committee" to make the agenda but I wanted to give the uninitiated a lay of the land so to speak. Visiting Central Texas for its world famous BBQ is like going to Disneyland and Universal Studios at once.
I encourage everyone to take the short 20-30 minute trip over to Lockhart, the official BBQ Capital of Texas. Within a stone's throw are 5-6 famous Texas spots that provide a variety of Central Texas style BBQ fare. The Barbs (featured above) is new and on my short list for sure. Regardless it might be worth sampling food at 2-3 of these places. I personally buy my sausage from Kreuz' by the box full to bring home every time I visit.
Of course venturing north 30-40 minutes is the South Central Austin area where a mind boggling array of BBQ joints pepper the town. Just south of Austin and probably 15-20 minutes from San Marcos in the town of Buda is Valentina's new restaurant. It used to be a truck operation in Manchaca but apparently they moved and opened what appears to be a large new venue. Definitely on my short list as well.
Venturing into town I'm also showing several of my favorites. If waiting in line for the Franklin's experience is your thing then it's one of the best. Leroy and Lewis is a different kind of BBQ joint often times pushing the boundaries of what BBQ can be. It's a larger truck venue with several other trailers offering different types of food with a large picnic area to eat in. Well worth the visit.
Again, not trying to set any agendas, just giving everyone a lay of the land. There's no way you can possibly visit anywhere near all this area has to offer in one weekend but hitting some of the highlights I've spelled out steers you in the right direction.
And to think I haven't even mentioned Tex-Mex cooking yet! Looking forward to the Spring in San Marcos!
Some members like to pick one spot and eat a full meal, others like to hit two or three places and share sampler plates with each other so that you get a good variety of BBQ - that is my preferred method personally but I'm open to whatever and where ever - one large group or several smaller groups going to different places, both are fun.
One of the really excellent places (which happens to be the closest to San Marcos) is Valentina's in Buda. They were formerly a truck operation on the south side of Austin, one I visited several times. I'm anxious to go back, may even have this is my first stop in April. Man my mouth is watering thinking about the Q.

DFPS, man I’m really sorry you can’t make it. It’s always tough when picking dates because it seems like someone always gets left out. We had a few people who couldn’t make it that weekend, [11-14] so I’ve got to go with the dates that are good for the most people. The good news is that I’m sure there’ll be more to come.
Well, crap. I'll be starting to build my new house in earnest this April, and with trying to do as much as I can out of pocket I can't fit this trip into the budget. It would be at least $2K for me to take the trip, and that would gravel my road or pour the shop slab. I would rather do a road trip with TWFTD anyway and we will for the next one. Sorry, but I just can't swing this one.
Well poop, was looking forward to seeing you guys again. Hopefully we'll hook up sometime in the future. Totally understand that home has got priority.
As the Executive Committee I believe y'all need a little help. The committee should vote to give yourselves a 50% raise! Y'all deserve every dang penny!! Shoot. Go ahead and make the vote for 75%. Panhead John and Troutman
