I’d vote pellet because it will be something new to learn plus great for those days where you want to save some time and energy. I am not sure the condition of the existing charcoal burners but if they are getting older, that would be a good reason to get the HB 131.Not a huge fan of the rusting look.

Congrats LA Pork Butt! Awesome win! I think I'd go the Hasty Bake route, if it were me personally. It seems like so many folks have had great experiences with it. Like you, I don't have a pellet smoker, and also, like you, not sure I'd want another fuel source to deal with. Plus, I really like playing with fire, cooking outdoors, etc...
One thing though, is the pellet smoker is probably better at is set it, forget it. Not sure I'm helping here... Congrats!

Thanks! I can do anything on my current cookers that I could do on the two I am considering, but not as easy as I could in these cookers. Currently I cook everything except on the gas grill with lump charcoal. I don’t think lump will work very well on the Hasty Bake, so no matter which direction I go I will be adding a fuel source.

Two local food trucks now use pellet cookers, not to cook but to hold their product or maybe heat up a side. I have started a pork butt on my charcoal cooker for heavier smoke then finished on the pellet cooker for a solid nights rest. We have a member here who uses a pellet grill as a cambro of sorts.

BTW LA Pork Butt I just wanted to give you some input on the Hasty Bake powder coating and how it does over the years. Given your current cookers, you have an interesting decision ahead of you and I'm honestly not sure what choice I would make. Let alone being prepared to make your choice for you
Also, lump works great on a Hasty Bake. I do both briquettes and lump, depending my mood and what I'm cooking.
Update: as an indicator of Lump and Hasty Bake goodness, HB sells their own lump charcoal :-)

LA Pork Butt I mean that you can use either. If you want to mix them, you could do that, too .... General rule of thumb, if I am cooking low and slow, I use briquettes. If I am cooking at 350 for poultry or direct heat for steaks and chops, I use lump. If I put in the grill grates flat side as a griddle, I also use lump and control the griddle surface temp by raising/lowering the firebox.

Eric, that clarification is extremely helpful. Thanks!

LA Pork Butt just to make this worse, tons of Hasty Bake owners use nothing but lump and a whole other group uses nothing but briquettes LOL

Congratulations LA Pork Butt. Welcome to the club. My choice was easy, new deck, new furniture and new gas grill. The Genesis has been awesome. As far as your final two choices, a pellet grill is limitless.

Funny you should mention the gas grill. I was holding out for that one, but gave up and bought one for my birthday in September. In the back of my mind was as soon as I buy the gas grill I’ll win the grand prize. So two months later I have no need for the gas grill. Go figure.Last edited by LA Pork Butt; November 24, 2025, 05:37 PM.

LA Pork Butt so you're saying I should buy a gas grill if I want to win the Grand Prize?

ecowper It probably won’t work, but it will give you an excuse to make a MCS purchase.
