Fourth Annual Memorial Cook: Honoring Our BBQ Community Legends.
A Heartfelt Tribute to Friends Who Have Passed Away
In the vibrant and smoky world of barbecue, our community forms a bond that transcends mere cooking. We gather, not just to share food, but to share stories, laughter, and a sense of camaraderie. It is with a heavy heart, yet deep gratitude, that we come together for a memorial cook to honor and celebrate the lives of our cherished friends who have passed away.
In order: Terrence Morris (Mr. Bones), Ernest Mtawali (Ernest), Dan Johnston (DanJohnston949)
In order: Ed Falis (EdF), Steve Markley (smarkley), Jim Maivald (BigJim)
Sharing Memories
Throughout the day, let's post some rib or bone-in cooks! These can be any kind of meat that is on the bone! Ribs, steaks, wings….you name it. Additionally, we would love to hear some of your great memories of our friends that have passed. Some of you may remember the first time they met their BBQ friend or mentor here at AmazingRibs.com. Some of you may recount your hilarious mishaps and legendary cooks with our friends that have passed. While our friends are gone, we can still feel their contributions to our community.
- Mr. Bones was a daily poster and a wonderful member of our community. He was truly a kind soul that was always willing to help and encourage. If you were feeling down and out, Mr. Bones was someone you could reach out to for comfort, and usually he'd offer it even if you didn't reach out.
- I am sure there will also be many memories of Ernest sharing his amazing food pictures, no one could plate a pro-level food shot like him, and don't forget his KBQ~has landed topic.
- Then we had our favorite “Back Yard Cremator” Danjohnston949 who would “like” every single post, regardless of the content. He did this just to make you feel welcome and appreciated. And let's not forget his rambunctious use of emojis!
- EdF was a consummate man of fun and quirky ideas that always made his cooks fun and interesting.
- Going way back, smarkley was always great to me when I was first getting started in the world of BBQ and outdoor cooking, including cast iron cooking. He also loved a good glass of Buffalo Trace around the pit. In fact he was the first to turn Huskee on to it! He was a whiskey connoisseur for sure, and he played bass in his daughter's band.
- From our staff, BigJim. Jim Maivald was our CTO as head of our technology team. He was a great guy, a sailor, and a serious cook that brought both his passion of tech and cooking into our community.
Barbecue is steeped in tradition, and from March 21st to March 23rd, we will embrace those rituals wholeheartedly. From the meticulous preparation of our ribs to the secret sauces, techniques, tips and tricks passed down through generations, every detail is a nod to our friends and heritage. The legacy left by our friends is one of love, passion, and community. Their dedication to the art of barbecue and their generosity in sharing their knowledge have left an indelible mark. In their honor, we pledge to continue their traditions, to teach the next generation, and to keep the flame of BBQ culture burning bright.
The "These Bones Are For You." Memorial Cook is more than just an event; it is a celebration of life, a tribute to friendship, and a reminder of the bonds that unite us. As we smoke for this memorial cook, we carry with us the memories filled with love, laughter, and the irresistible aroma of BBQ. Our friends may be gone, but they will never be forgotten, and their spirit will always be a part of our BBQ community.
I can't wait to see all of your bone-in cooks in honor of our friends and legends!
