It’s called MCS. More Cooker Syndrome. Very similar to GAS; Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Actually I think it’s a special subset of GAS.
Basically it means that after a while you have a feeling that you MUST obtain a new cooker. It’s a very common affliction among Pit members. It’s an itch that must be scratched. You are doomed! Good luck….😂
2007 - New house, need a grill! - buys Weber Kettle and Weber Gasser
2007 - Need a smoker! Buys smokenator
2008 - Brother in law has a WSM - Need a WSM - buys WSM
10 years on "sanity" later
2018 - Baby on the way - need an easy smoker - buys RecTeq 700. "Pellets are amazing!!"
2019 - I miss charcoal cooking, buys a SNS for the kettle.
2020 - COVID Sucks! I need a grill! Tree falls on carport, oven goes out, furloughed - purchase put on hold
October 2021 - COVID Still sucks - "I need to spend money I don't have on a grill I don't need!" - Buys a Summit S6
November 2021 - This thing is amazing - buys all of the accessories they can think of
December 2021 - I wonder what it'd be like to have a KJ next to my summit..... 🤪
I can attest that life will go on after passing the large BGE along! I also find the Summit (E and S) appealing, but I can better justify the SmokeFire EX4.
CaptainMike , Trying with all my energy to stay away! BabyBackManiac's channel makes them look pretty sweet though.! I probably don't have the WAF for a big offset at the house, so I did mentally dabble with a KBQ, but having an exposed live fire around with 3 and 4 year old seemed....suboptimal
GoDuke I was close to ordering one of these. Was going to put it on my deck. But since it was open flame I couldn't (Wood Deck). Ordered an Offset instead since the fire is inside. Shirley Patio is more compact than a barrel smoker. I think you need one.
Here’s why it’s so dadgum hard to get rid of my Egg…
November 19, 2012
Tonight I grilled some fine rib eye steaks on my brand new Big Green Egg grill. And cooked some delicious sweet potatoes. There's a story behind this grill and I want to share it with you.
Around 13 years ago I was in a pretty dark time
in my life. I was trying door to door sales just to survive and wasn't doing very well at it. One day I stopped in at a spa store. Got turned down. Like usual. But something caught my eye. They were selling a very cool grill called the Big Green Egg. They were grilling some chicken that day and offered me some. It was the very best grilled chicken I had ever eaten. I was hooked. I wanted one of those Big Green Egg grills and I wanted one bad. I even put a picture of one on one on my "Dream Board".
But instead of getting one, my life got darker. And darker. And darker. I no longer dreamed. All my dreams seemed like cruel jokes. If I even remember them that is. I rarely thought of the Big Green Egg anymore. I tore up my "Dream Board".
A few years ago my life started turning around. Slowly but surely I began dreaming once again. One day I was hanging out with a one of the owners of the company I now work for. We got to talking about grilling and I remembered the Big Green Egg. The dream started coming alive as I told him all about this awesome grill I fell in love with about 10 years earlier. He ended up buying one and I got to enjoy watching him learn how to use it. Enjoyed some fine eating off of it too. Soon a number of my friends got one of their own. Last spring my friends had a Big Green Egg barbecue competition. And I couldn't go because I didn't have one.
I had some tough times and a Big Green Egg just didn't fit into our budget. I could have sat around and felt sorry for myself. Here I turned my friends onto my dream grill and I couldn't have one myself. Sure, I could have scraped together the money, but I had dug a mighty big financial hole and until I was on top I had no business buying one. I had sorta resigned to never getting one. But instead of feeling bad, I chose to enjoy what I did have. A Weber Kettle Grill that I bought second hand for $20.00 at a yard sale. And more importantly, I chose to enjoy my friend's enjoyment of their Big Green Eggs. I celebrated their enjoyment of their Big Green Eggs.
Last Friday my manager called me to the corporate office for a meeting. "Around five o'clock" he told me. Seemed kinda weird to be called to a meeting at the end of the day but I went. My manager and the two company owners asked me to come outside with them. We walked out to one of the owner's truck and they opened the door. Inside was a large Big Green Egg. With all the accessories. And four bags of charcoal. And it was mine. "For a job well done. We appreciate you and what you do for our company." I gave them all a hug. Twice.
We loaded the grill onto my vehicle and I headed for home. Cried the whole way. You see, this isn't "just" a nice grill. It's not even "just" a very nice gift from the company owners. No, any other nice gift, while greatly appreciated, would not have made me cry. What made me cry then and now again as I type this was the realization that I can dream again. And that my dreams can come true. And that I do have what it takes to succeed in life after the hell I have been through. To succeed well enough that my bosses would spend a lot if money on this grill set up to show me their appreciation. I am deeply grateful tonight. For my new Big Green Egg grill (and all the accessories!). For my awesome bosses. For my lovely wife who simply said "You are worth it". But most of all, for God who touched my life and set my feet back on a solid path.
And guess what? I already have my invitation to the Big Green Egg competition next spring. We will be doing ribs. I better get to practicing don't you think?
PS. A special thank you to my bosses for knowing me well enough to purchase the perfect gift for me. I will always treasure this grill, but most of all, your friendship.

Full disclosure I have an egg. Keep the egg and give it some love once a month and let it love you back with what you cook. Let it serve as a reminder of the gift you received and to never give up on your dreams.
As BabyBackmaniac said in his video (below), go with your heart. They're all excellent cookers. Given your story, I'd be hard pressed to part with it too. I think Summit owners love them, but I can't imagine it'd bring you the same satisfaction that looking at your Egg does.
Now two cookers..... 🤔
If you have a Weber Kettle and a BGE, there's really nothing the Summit will add to your world other than new and More.
Thanks. I made my decision. I can’t sell the Egg. Gonna get it out and use it now and then. I refurbed it awhile back, everything except the Nest. I’ll clean the Nest up and paint it and do some cooks on it.
Well said. I find it hard pressed to see what the Summit would do too, given a 26" kettle and the 18" BGE. You can smoke on all three, you can do hot and fast on all three. It's really just a matter of something "new and shiny".
I like the advice Justin gives in that video about asking your wife which one is prettier and she wants to look at for the next 20-30 years! . That is actually one factor in how I ended up choosing the SNS Deluxe Kamado back in January - it was "prettier" according to her than the other two in my top 3 choices.
After reading the story behind your BGE, I think you need to pimp it out and use it a little more, for the cooks where an 18" kamado makes sense.
If you find yourself using it more, and not able to fit what you want on it, then is when you start thinking about a Weber Summit or else a larger kamado. I have the SNS Deluxe Kamado, which is 22" inside (grate) diameter, and love it. Then again, I also didn't pay for it - I won it in the January 2021 Amazing Ribs Great Giveaway (Thank you Amazing Ribs!).
I'm a Weber guy. I have the Weber Summit E-670, WSM 18", Weber Kettle 22", SmokeFire Ex6, and Go Anywhere Grill, but the large BGE holds a special place in my heart. It was given to me by my wife for Father's Day about 6 years ago. It was the gateway to diving headfirst in to the low and slow world. It's reliable, and great on those cold winter nights for holding temps, so that I don't have to spend an inordinate amount of time in the cold battling temps. I would have a difficult time parting with my BGE.

When I bought my Summit and my RecTeq, I followed the "bigger is better" philosophy. I generally still think that's true, BUT sometimes I feel guilty firing them up for like 1 steak. So there is something to be said for a smaller grill.....
I just use my SNS or my Vortex if I want to fire up for a small cook, versus the entire grill. Or get lazy and use the Weber gas grill...
In my Amazon wish list I have an item from Unknown BBQ that is a stainless grill grate for use on top of a Weber large chimney. Ideal for a sear or cooking just a steak...
I have a Kamado Joe & a Summit Kamado. Since the Summit arrived, the KJ rarely gets used. Both are great but the Summit is just easier to deal with in just about every aspect.
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
I have a Large BGE and a Weber Performer. I use them about 50/50. Sometimes I’ll use the BGE for everything, for weeks, and then one day I’ll switch to the Weber, and use that for everything for the next dozen cooks. And then sometimes I’ll do ribs (or any other low and slow cook) on the BGE, and grill chicken or burgers or hot dogs (or any other hot and fast cook) on the Weber. With those two, I don’t feel like anything else is really necessary.
The Summit is awesome. I’d love to have one. But, having a BGE, I would consider a WSCG a sideways move. You’d be trading one set of compromises (that you are used to) for a different set. I’d rather have the BGE and the money.
I might suggest you get a table for the BGE. That changes it. It sits higher off the ground, adds a workspace, and eliminates any fear of it falling and breaking. Plus it looks good.
Don't beat yourself up about it, but keep the fond memories.
My first foray was also a Big Green Egg. I absolutely loved it, and eventually with 2 kids found myself never using it. I bought a gasser, and the BGE took up way too much space and after buying a pellet grill I sold the thing and I don't regret that for a minute. It makes me a little jealous to think that my coworker gets to fire up my old BGE but perhaps one day I'll be back in place where I have time to tend to a fire.
My old kamado, same size as a large BGE, has a few issues and MCS was strong so I bought a bigger kamado: the SnS Deluxe. The SnS system makes it a multi use cooker and I've really enjoyed using it. But, I'm keeping the old kamado too. It is cracked and the stand was falling apart (replaced) plus the gasket is bad and the side shelves need attention. It will eventually fail but the crack is hairline so I think it will last for several years more.
Keeping both gives me more cooking space plus the option of doing two different style cooks at once. You might find that having the smaller grill is convenient at times rather than firing up the bigger cooker. I also like that you don't have to stand there watching over it - I put a small chuckie on the SnS last night and then went to a friend's house for two hours. Returned and the chuckie was right where I wanted it - good smoke but not done, I cubed it up for a batch of chili.
Also, the sentimental value is a reason to keep the BGE. If nothing more, dust it off and put some Christmas decorations on it for the holidays
