Hunting Season 2023 & Wild Game Cooks

Day one of dove seasons opening weekend is in the books. Headed out of the middle pasture at 3 as I had hit my daily bag limit of 15 birds. Also harvested one wild hog (boar) with my sidearm (.357 mag). Was a beautiful sunrise. Didn't shoot worth a flip, took me 31 shots to harvest 15 birds...oh well do better tomorrow!

What a great day! We aren’t seeing many birds. They must be congregating near water and there’s darn little of that here. My son in law had his annual opening morning dove hunt yesterday. If I heard him correctly 15 hunters harvested 17 birds. The pig looks slick and healthy he’ll be delicious. Congratulations!

Hog hunting, what a thrill. The blue cord is tied to the hog so it cannot run far after being shot. I Like it. 🙈🙉🙊 😂🤣

I found the trick to hitting doves is to hide until they get close enough to shoot.

    Happy Hunting to you

WOW! what a great start to hunt season! Plates look great also. Have you tried wrapping bacon around those breasts and smoking?

Poppers, OF COURSE, lol. I like to stiff them in a jalapeño, then wrap in bacon.

In my experience, 15 doves on 31 shots is good shooting. I'm more like 5 on 75 shots. I used to be a decent wing shooter but haven't kept up with it over the years.

Oh it got much worse as the days went on. Had I been shooting my auto 5 or mossberg 500, it would have been even worse. At least with my double I am limited to only wasting 2 shots at a time, lol.

      Nice pics!

Never hunted and it has been a while since I've shot trap/skeet (Son kinda out-grew it). If given the chance I would like to experience hunting game birds (esp Duck!)

        That sounds pretty cool

I might dust off the shotgun when the weather starts to cool and head out to the skeet & trap range

Alan Brice wow! I can get a box for $8.50 at that price reloading is better. Can usually reload shells for about $9-$10 a box.

Thankfully it is starting to get just a little bit cooler out there. A little bit.

Ever have someone walk up to the field and shoot your dove decoys? Guy who shot my dad's didn't realize they made them for doves.

Jerod Broussard father in law last Saturday was hunting across the field, drove up at lunch. While talking, swung on one of those foam decoys clipped to that dead treetop in the middle of that goatweed there. They are like 5 for $10 so no harm no foul. Got a good laugh out of it.

Just got this guy (last years pistol harvest, and yes, 100% fair chase on our property) back from taxidermist. Just missed the B&C list by less that 5 points. Probably the harvest I am most proud of, was a spot and stalk with a Ruger Blackhawk .357 magnum & factory iron sights. His right eye looks odd as it had been gouged out from sparring, and had healed over.

Took my nephew (11) out for a day of hunting and fishing Saturday. Harvested some dove, and caught a stringer of largemouth. Sent him home with the do e breasts so my sister in law could make some poppers, and we fried up some of the largemouth on site for a fish sandwich bank lunch. This was at the request of my brother to help get him off the screens and outdoors. He had a blast! Today worked up a load for my wife's 6mm Remington (ignore the flyer, I pulled it, that was on me) and set my 50 pin on my bow. Both days were a success.

Fish in a cast iron skillet over a campfire is something worth it's weight in gold. Especially when there's a chill in the air.

Looks like he needs to practice on the shooting.

        There's too many holes.

Spent Saturday out at the farm with dad. Got my broadhed tune on my bow, set up one of my portable pop-up blinds on a game trail, cleared a shooting lane, and let my eldest girl get 20 rounds downrange with the remington 600 .243 she will hunt with this season. I'll do a couple bowhunts with dad this year at the farm, but most of my deer hunting is at my place in Jefferson. I scouted some game trails last week, and will still hunt it for the rest of bow season. Tonight had our traditional weekend before bow season opening weekend (if that makes sense) Meal. The last stash of venison back strap from last year's harvest. Served with a tater, mushrooms and onions, and topped with a compound butter.

Your posts bring back so many good memories of hunting seasons past. One of the things I miss most is the dinner at the end of the first day of quail season. We would fry up the quail legs for appetizers to go with a little good bourbon while the breasts, mashed potatoes, biscuits, and gravy were cooking. After walking most of the day it is amazing how much food a dozen men can put away. I still think there are few things I’d rather watch than a good bird dog work.

Unfortunately the fire ants and encroachment by other predators that man has brought along have decimated both the quail and rabbit populations. We have successfully reintroduced a few coveys of bobwhites out at my grandmother's farm, but we do not hunt them. Hard to beat water hing a dog do what a dog does best though.

Just got home about 20 min ago and showered. Saturday I mainly scouted for signs of the rut, scrapes rubs and the such. Figured out where a trio of does are bedding, a couple new crossing boints on Big Cyprus Bayou, and that hogs are back to destroying the place on the back end. Today spent all day from 30mins before sun up until legal sundown still hunting I'm my bushrag. Jesus it was HOT. Walked a little fork horn, saw a small sounder of hogs too far away to launch an aarow at until one decided to come a little too close just at dark. He's quartered and in the aging fridge for the next few days until I finish processing him out. Took a break in one of my box stands at 1400 for lunch. 2 tins of sardines, and a 1/2 sleeve of saltines. Was a good weekend.

Never did sardines but have used Blazer-like vanes. I remember when them little dudes came out and soooo many people thought they wouldn't work.

Jerod Broussard I think next year I'm going to go with 4 fletch low profiles, also might even try the micro diameter arrow bandwagon.

I shot 4-fletch for indoor and some hunting with my feathers. I had two feather choppers to chop my own low profile stuff.
