    Radish-the forgotten Veggie?

Got to thinking about some of the foods I was introduced to as a kid, and don't really see much of anymore.
Grandparents always grew a huge garden and did a LOT of pickling and canning.
They always grew a small plot of radishes to eat fresh during the summer. I can't recall if they canned or pickled them. I do remember during the season they were eaten as a snack and on the table for nearly every meal.

I do remember the accepted way to eat them was washed, ends clipped off and soaked in an ice water bath.
Pluck them out, slice in half, a touch of salt and a dab of home made butter to take away the sting.
I haven't done that in years. Wondering if that was another local thing.
I NEVER ate a radish as a kid without the touch of butter and salt.

Fresh Kohlrobi were also a big thing. Sliced and iced in a water bath. Touch of salt and actually pretty darn good snack.

As a kid my mother always added Radish's to our salads, thinly sliced.
Far better served raw than cooked in any way to me.
I probably haven't looked a radish's way in 45 years, will look tomorrow when we shop.
Forgot she also dices it and puts it in potato salad

I like raddish and eat them individually and in salads. My grandfather used to pound them down like peanuts. They are good for you to high in potassium.

I like radish as well - love adding a little salt to them and eating as a snack. Definitely into a salad as well! Daikon, using that in Kim Chi is great as well!

Or doing a quick pickle with radish and onions. And using them on a bahn mi.....gosh, it’s not even 8am my time and I’m craving........

Yep. My step dad did that. Store bought though.

intried to buy one radish at Whole Foods the other day. Nope! Had to buy the whole bunch.

Grass fed butter and Murray sea salt is good with radish.

My mom always had radishes on the table. Raw, trimmed, and cold. I never cared for them though. However my wife loves them and pretty much always has them on hand. She eats right out of the bag. Just rinses under cold water, trims off the end with a paring knife, sprinkle on a little sat, and pops in her mouth.

I love radishes. i would eat red ones with salt as a kid. My sister and brother in law (who is French) taught me to butter radishes as a snack recently. I like sliced radishes on tacos. I buy daikon radishes and carrots to julienne and pickle. Radishes are underrated.

Not sure I've had a radish unless someone else put it in a salad I ate, since I was a kid. We grew them in the garden back then. I'll have to keep an eye out for them as well.

RonB I know--kind of sucks don't it. I'm thinking about running out and buying a bunch just to give them go tonight.

I made these pickled radishes and carrots for Bahn Mi but it's good on all kinds of stuff.

I like radishes but they do not like me. They give me terrible indigestion for some reason. If I eat one radish I'll be belching it for the next 3 to 5 hours.

Maybe you should pair them with a beer and just embrace it?

I’m growing them in my garden now. Great cold weather veggie - taste is better when grown in the spring or fall - sweeter and not as much bite.

I thought the bite was the point?

Yup, as a kid radishes we’re about the only fresh thing I can remember. Then, at the age of 25 I was introduced to the greens of such item. Now I eat em together, don’t need salt.

BTW Cheef, ye sure are broadening out lately. Into the land of veggies, be careful.

ONLY the exotic veggies. But I have to admit these replies with the pickled variety get me going! My wife is beginning to get a little protective of refrigerator space though.

Love radishes. I usually keep a few on hand for my salads, love daikon in kimchi, a good slice of baguette with good salty butter and thin sliced radishes. Also great on tacos.

I've also messed around with pickling radishes but for some reason they smell incredibly strongly, even tightly sealed in a mason jar, so I'm prohibited from pickling them any more.
