Got to thinking about some of the foods I was introduced to as a kid, and don't really see much of anymore.
Grandparents always grew a huge garden and did a LOT of pickling and canning.
They always grew a small plot of radishes to eat fresh during the summer. I can't recall if they canned or pickled them. I do remember during the season they were eaten as a snack and on the table for nearly every meal.
I do remember the accepted way to eat them was washed, ends clipped off and soaked in an ice water bath.
Pluck them out, slice in half, a touch of salt and a dab of home made butter to take away the sting.
I haven't done that in years. Wondering if that was another local thing.
I NEVER ate a radish as a kid without the touch of butter and salt.
Fresh Kohlrobi were also a big thing. Sliced and iced in a water bath. Touch of salt and actually pretty darn good snack.
