    Freakin blueberries are EXPENSIVE.

I’ve been thinking about making a blueberry thing, like a crisp (crumble, buckle, pandowdy, cobbler, clafoutis, etc hahahaha). Man, freakin’ blueberries are expensive! $4.59/18oz, fresh. $10.39/48oz frozen. $4.59/15oz canned!

Wild vs cultivated, not an issue. For cooking, I want consistency and size. Cultivated is fine. Cost is actually close, ie both are a lot.

Mrs. Mosca loves blueberries, so I’m still going to do it. But when it’s all said and done I’m going to have $15-$20 invested in a freakin’ home made dessert, and it’s not even a pie. They’re supposed to be cheaper than store-bought!

BTW, I’m going to go with frozen, my rationale being that since I’m going to be macerating and cooking them these is no benefit to choosing fresh and having to clean and pick through them. Plus they’ll store better.

EVERYTHING is expensive these days! But I sure like the sound of what you’re planning!

Yea I love them as well but have not tried to make any sort of dessert out of them Just make up a fruit salad with strawberries or whatever looks good and eat them that way. Your point is well taken regardless, I just paid $4.47 for an 18 oz. container on Sunday. The so called "organic" ones were a buck more (forget it). The bad news is when oil jumps to $200 per barrel that price may very well double. Oh boy, the times we live in.

We have a few growing in the back, just not enough for more than a handful of berries. And I know where there is a nice stand, but it is in a marsh about a half mile deep into the woods.

Troutman All are welcome! But I should warn you that once they're ripe, our grandbabies eat these things as quickly as they can pick them.

I planted a bunch of blueberries in the front yard and sadly they did not make it. If you have a good spot for them they are well worth growing. Blueberries are one of the best fruits to eat for your health.

Didn’t realize I had such a gold mine! These babies will be pumping out 2-3 quarts a day in about 3 weeks. With gas going up, maybe I can trade blueberries for boat gas 🤔

No wonder you have bears hanging around.

We paid $1.99 for 6oz of Blueberries yesterday.
They're from Chile but they still blue and berry shaped so ran with them.

The you-pick-em blueberry farms will be ramping up soon and we'll stock up the freezer. Still have a small bit from last year.

                  Funny story-

My wife recently found blueberries on sale for $1/lb (!) so she bought like 10 packages since our family clearly loves them. We stored them in our spare fridge. She also had a turkey thawing in said spare fridge. You probably see where this is going already.

She had me go check the turkey to see if it was thawed so I could prep it. It was mostly thawed so I brought it to the kitchen to our regular fridge to finish thawing overnight. "There's no room up here", she says. "Take it back to the spare fridge". I do. As I'm putting it back on the shelf I must've ripped the plastic a little. My son later informs us there's a gallon a pink turkey juice all over the fridge shelves and all over.....you guessed it- ALL of the packs of bluberries which were, of course, directly underneath the turkey. And of course they are the perforated plastic packages.

In my defense she was the one who told me to go do all of this, so it was her fault. She did not agree with this rationale.

But it's always the husbands fault.

Prices aren't too bad here - about 10 cents per berry.

We have 6 plants, but they won't start producing until the middle of June.

                    Blueberries?! Try raspberries.

It irks me no end that the common raspberry pies and tarts of my youth are never sold anymore by stores or restaurants. I'd make them myself but I'd be the only one eating them so the reward is lower.

At least my wife makes raspberry cookies semi regularly.

To start eating more blueberries I've been having them for dessert. I've played around with various toppings and stuff (cheeses, whipped creams, etc.). What I've stumbled upon is especially elegant in its simplicity: 1/2 cup of fresh blueberries drizzled ever-so-lightly with local honey. Amazingly good.

(My local blueberries are hovering just under $0.30 an ounce, so $4.61 right now for 11 oz. Occasionally we'll get these ones grown in Chile which are huge compared to the itty bitty ones. They are also less sweet, so I tend to like them a bit better.)
