What do I use this on?

My daughter returned from Turkey the day before the earth quakes started. I’m glad she and her family are home. She brought me a large vacuum sealed bag of Ottoman spice. What can I use it for?

Everything that I have read on it says that it is very versatile. So you can use it for meat, soups, rice and veggies.

Glad your family made it home safe.

Thank you. She has gone to Egypt on vacation before. This time they made time to spend a few days in Turkey also and loved it. The earth quakes had literally started before they touched down in the USA. Blessed again!

Since Turkey is famous for its grilled meats, it should make a beef kebab pretty flavorful, I'm guessing. One of the best meals I ever had was a kebab dinner in an Istanbul hotel. I've been trying to replicate it ever since.

I would try it first on my favorite, absolute favorite if done well, Shish Kafta. Magnifico!

My ottoman is made of leather so I usually use Lexol.

All kidding aside, I wonder what's in the mix. Turks do a lot of wonderful grilled foods so I don't think you'll have a hard time finding a use. Vacuum seal and store most of it in the freezer, taking out smaller amounts as needed.

From what I know, Ottoman Spice is just another name for Baharat .... basically a mix of 6 or 7 spices that is commonly used in cooking in the Levant (the arc running from Athens to Cairo is the Levant). You can use it directly on things you will grill and many Turkish, Lebanese, Israeli, and Egyptian recipes will call for it. If you are looking at one of those recipes and it calls for Baharat, you can use your Ottoman Spice.

Here's an example recipe: Levantine Lamb & Bean Soup - Pitmaster Club (amazingribs.com)
