Best Bacon According to Food and Wine Magazine

What little respect I had for F&W, I just lost. It’s not about the best bacon, it’s pay to play. While the answer to the ultimate question is life, the universe and everything is 42….. the other answer is marketing. Heck, even SE sold out (dot dash media) which is why we see ads for underwear on a cooking site 🤦🏼‍♀️

thank you, amazingribs, com for keeping it real!

They did not get any of my Maple Sugar Espresso bacon to taste test. Have not bought packaged bacon for years. Just does not compare.

Sound great I never thought of using Espresso with bacon

I'm sure yours would have blown the competition away. I've seen pics of your bacon. Outstanding

I've never claimed to be a bacon expert, but come on Food & Wine. You've got to be kidding.

None of these make my short list.

The article did state, "For our taste test, we selected seven bacon brands from grocery stores and online retailers based on their popularity and availability."

That would automatically rule out any of the good regional bacon that I think most of us would gravitate to. I would put Nueske's up against any bacon in the country, but even locally you have to know which stores carry it.

As for popularity, let's not forget that Rudy's BBQ and General Store is rated 4.5 stars according to Google. That is the same rating that Tejas Chocolate+ BBQ has. Having eaten at both, I can tell you for a fact that what is popular, and what is good, are two different things.

          +100 on Nueske’s!

You know that a “Best” listicle is bogus when they have categories of winners.

What a joke. Another article written by someone who knows nothing about the subject they are writing about. 🙄🤦‍♂️

Those F&W testers obviously know nothing about bacon.

For their sake, I hope they know more about wine.

That was ridiculous. Smithfield is terrible. Should have been Wright's.

My wife brought home Smithfield because it was on sale. First thing she said after cooking it was, "Does this taste right to you?". I said, "yup, tastes like crappy bacon."

As if the list wasn’t ridiculous enough, they have a category for “Best on a BLT” and “Crispiest”….🙄 Hell, any bacon is going to be crispy if you cook it long enough. What’s next? ….. “Best Bacon for your Charro beans.”

I think you meant to say "any bacon is going to be crispy if you cook it correctly". You know, like Tom makes it. Maybe minus the smoke.

I'll go with my butchers own raised, no comparison to store brands.

I've been buying Smithfield bacon for years. Been telling people it's the best bacon ever. Glad to see Food and Wine step up.

Cmon, we all know that Farmer John's thick cut bacon is the best bacon out there.

Apparently I have missed the underwear ads on Serious Eats. With warmer weather coming, they could be helpful in selecting outfits best suited to deep frying in your skivvies.

The FW list does not even list all products tested. Stupid.

The best bacon is homemade. We’re lucky in this group, we either have the technology or access to members who share it.
We just had BLT’s for dinner yesterday with our homemade bacon. So much better than store bought.

Funny that I mainly see these “Best” articles linked here on the site. I don’t normally see then as I always specify in my online searches not to return anything where the word best is prominent. Sorry Best Buy, but you really aren’t the best, now are you?
