I tended bar in late 70's. Usually ran things by myself but had off duty in the wings, just in case. Guy asked for two shots. (I was fresh out of bartending school), the glasses were not identical so the levels did not even up. He would not pay so I poured each into a proper shot glass and they were perfect pours.
He still would not pay so I had him bounced. Seeya.
In England (and some bars in the US) the bottles are in a dispenser that supposedly pours equal measures to spec. Before I quit liquor I prefered free pours as some bartenders are VERY generous.
Damn, I’m kinda disappointed now. Just went to my closest Walmart and I was ready to rip em a new one! I found a digital produce scale in the………….produce area. I weighed a 1.5 lb bag of potatoes, a 3 lb bag of potatoes, and a 3 lb bag of onions. They all weighed a little OVER the printed bag weight by an ounce or so! It looked like they gave you exactly how much you were supposed to get and did not include the package weight on the label! 😳

Alright then, let’s go to the meat department, surely I’ll find some shenanigans over there! I picked up a chuck roast, 2 packages of their chicken breast strips, a 1 lb package of their Great Value Bacon, a 1 1/2 lb package of Wrights Bacon and a package of pork chops. Back to the scales! Well son of a ….! Not only did every package weigh what it was supposed to, they all weighed just a little more than what the label said! 😳 So apparently, at least this Walmart is now doing what they should have been doing all along. I’ve never weighed any of my purchases before today, but I have no doubt that I’ve been screwed in the past, just like the guy in the videos brought to light. IF Walmart and Kroger have actually taken the necessary steps to stop this type of overcharging, I’m giving credit to the guy in the videos. Well done sir! I might go to my local Kroger tomorrow and see what I find there.
This guy has a ton of videos on YouTube and other platforms where he’s been exposing the fraud at Walmart, Kroger and some of their suppliers. Because of him, and all the blowback from the public, he’s making a big difference! Apparently he started exposing all the stores and mfgr’s. screwing us over back in January/February. Kroger has been selling “grab and go” $5.00 packages of cheese that are supposed to weigh 12 oz [.75 lbs]. After he made videos about Kroger short changing people on those bags, it was several months before Kroger did anything about…..and it was done quietly with no apologies, admission of mistakes or anything…..figures.
How about pumping meat with water? I drain the fat from ground beef in a glass jar and there is a little fat and a lot of water. How about opening a 15 oz can of of green beans and pouring out the water, then weighing the beans and it is 8 oz.
So, I had my own little encounter with this last night. HEB has started carrying pre-packaged shaved beef. $10/lb and you just can't beat the convenience for when you want a cheesesteak that night (as I did). I'm uncertain exactly what cut of beef it is, but it doesn't appear to crazy lean like a round or anything and its shaved far thinner than I could get it. It's quite good.
Last night was the third time I've bought the product. Here it is:
I get four cheesesteaks out of it and last night I decided to use my kitchen scale to make the portions as equal as possible. The net weight on the package is 16 oz. I should get four or at least very close to four 4-oz portions.
I did my first three four ounce portions and then when I looked at what was left.....there didn't seem to be four ounces there remaining. Indeed there was not! Just 2.2 ounces!
I re-weighed everything. There had been no mistake. The 16 oz package contained only 14.2 ounces of meat.
My first thought was that the 16 oz was the weight of the meat plus the weight of the packaging. (That would be a totally American thing, wouldn't it?) But no, 16 oz is the net weight, which is just the weight of the product. If it included the weight of the packaging, it would be the gross weight.
Am I going to march to HEB headquarters in San Antonio with a flaming torch over 1.8 oz of meat? No, of course not. (Primarily as it is as hot as the surface of the sun outside, it is eighty-two hours away by walking, and would require me to also carry 21 lbs of torch fuel; I checked.)
I typically do cheesesteaks every two weeks. It'll be interesting to repeat this experiment and see if the results stay the same, get better, or worse.
If I can salvage it from this mornings spent coffee grounds, I'm going to see if I can retrieve the plastic wrap cover which probably had the lot number (or other such thing) on it and keep track of that.

Milk. We like Darigold whole milk, locally produced. They have started selling not only standard but also fortified milk, with added protein/fiber/whatever. It is a bit more expensive, looks like a half gallon. I have gotten it when standard milk was not available.
The carton did not feel right to my "calibrated" hand. Turns out it is 59 ounces versus 64 for standard. Clearly marked in somewhat small print on carton. My take: not illegal, but tricky.
Another reason to not shop at Walmart. You ain’t gonna believe this one. And, in addition to this, their use of dynamic pricing, it sure ain’t for the good of the consumer.
This reinforces my effort to shop local. The $500 I spent recently on a grill there is the exception to the rule, and may be 10x what I have ever spent there. I doubt that I am in Walmart more than twice a year.
They caught a police officer, here locally using the info to surveil his exgirlfriend, Now all kinds of peeps want them removed. There has been success.
They've caught DOZENS if not HUNDREDS of our sworn protectors misusing these public surveillance cameras - mostly for purposes of tracking romantic partners or former romantic partners. These stories are absolutely rampant and disgusting. I'm of the firm belief that we should be throwing the book at these people and they should be permanent BARRED from EVER serving in any kind of law enforcement capacity for LIFE.
Panhead John our town is putting up flock cameras everywhere. People have been caught dismantling or breaking them. They're supposed to cut down on crime, enable LE to find criminals. Maybe so but I don't like the idea that I am being watched and tracked. Especially bad with all the creepy gov't officials getting caught abusing them and using them for their own stalking benefits. I'm not going to get political but will say this, there's a reason I have this window sticker on my truck. That is all.
I saw a great video of Darth Vader at a City Council meeting arguing in FAVOR of these cameras for keeping tabs on the public. Yeah, actual Darth Vader full outfit, voice synthesizer and everything. It was a great point, if you ask me...
Per internet search this morning, greater DFW area has between 3,000 to 4,000 active flock cameras and privacy concerns are mounting with a few cities removing them or not renewing contracts. I have mixed feelings on big brother. I saw on YT video yesterday from the same guy who went to Walmart about the prepackaged weights. He is now showing how Walmart tracks you and gets personal info on you the minute you walk into the store.
I will turn off my phone before entering Walmart or any other store from now on.
I never use their Wifi and I will henceforth turn off Bluetooth. You do get crappy reception inside most of the time, though, due to their metal roof - another way they try to encourage you to use their WiFi. Atwood's is HORRIBLE reception inside their building, though...
