If grilling over charcoal I will use at least two to three chickens or a few steaks. We like and look forward to leftovers. When smoking if I am going to prep meats and babysit my stick burner, do the final work after taking off you can bet it will be no less than three or four racks of baby backs or two shoulders, two or three King Salmon or Steelhead or however many fill the racks. That is why I have a Chamber vac and upright freezer. All of the above is just fine coming out again and when you live in Michgan it is superb about February.....

This is basically the way I tend to go. I don't cook every day, but usually cook for several days at once. And if smoking, why would I do one butt, when I can do two on the same amount of fuel, and vacuum seal all the pulled pork for easy future meals...

This is why someone made the Weber Smokey Joe.

Great point! I had a smokey Joe but gave it to one of my employees as they wanted a small charcoal grill for 1-2 people. It then made room for me to purchase a jumbo Joe before our next beach trip to Carolina Beach 😉

The LW doesn’t eat beef, so I’m on my own if I want a burger or a steak. It’s not unusual for me to fire up the afterburner or Silverbac for just one item.

life is short, if you want some charcoal taste for a small meal, go for it if you have the time!

On the Weber kettle: 4 burgers or 6 brats.

I am in a different place, but if I am cooking on the flat top it is one piece of bacon. But typically, it is the 2 of us so there is no real minimum.

I smoked a 7.5 lb pork butt In the KBQ last Sunday. It looked lonely In there. Given the need to closely tend the KBQ, I should load more

Funny you ask because I am so stingy with my pellet stove. When using that I always bulk cook like cooking 3 or 4 pork butts at a time instead of just one. Same with most anything else. But when it comes to charcoal there is no minimum. I might not use the kettle but often use my Lodge Sportman’s grill, or my Hasty Bake HB250 PRO grill for just one item like a steak or hot dog.

Four hotdogs would be the probable minimum. I would use the gas grill, or our el-cheapo hibachi.

One PBC chimney of charcoal can provide a pretty good cook on the hibachi.

                  This is bratwurst with buns:

Nice cook. My first charcoal grill owned was a similar hibachi.

                    Hulagn1971 and @Purc,

I bought the hibachi specifically for camping as it is lightweight, cools down quick and has adjustable racks. When storing it, it goes in a plastic trash bag and into a tote.

We used one camping when I was a kid.

Got so much good feedback and motivation! Thanks bbq homies!

I’d like to say you all motivated me to get the grill out and seize the day!!…. however… long hot day at the factory, got a shower right when I got home, had an adult gummy bear, plopped down on the couch.

long story short, the drumsticks in the oven were pretty good! 🤣

I cook for 2 most of the time now with Offspring having moved on to his job. However, since I have had the Primo XL I cook on it a lot as it is easy to start and stop and left over lump is easy to reuse. I will use it for 2 burgers or 2 of anything. That said, if I'm cooking burgers, brats, chicken, etc. I'll often cook a couple extra so my bride has some lunches.

If I’m cooking just for myself I typically keep it inside - skillet, airfryer, etc. If food for two or more people is involved it’s worth it to fire up a cooker. Might be half a chimney for one side of the grill, of just a couple burners on the griddle. If I’m firing up the stickburner I’m making enough food for an army. I gave up small smokes; now I only cook a full load and vac seal individual portions for the deep freeze.

That is the reason I bought the KJ Jr.

It is tiny and I can cook one, maybe two steaks on it and I do not need to light a whole bunch of charcoal.

91 responses and not a single one about Huskee and a single hot dog. I really have to do everything around here. 🤣
