Father's Day (June 16, 2024) - What Do You Have Planned?

Or what have they planned for you?

Father's Day is my day, so no surprises. I don't want to be taken out to a restaurant, I don't want them picking up food and I don't want my wife to cook for me. My day - My choice.

    So I am making:
    • Lobster rolls (went to Restaurant Depot and picked up a 5 lb. box of cold water lobster tails)
    • Cracker Jack Shrimp (breaded and deep fried). Served with a seafood sauce - heavy on the horseradish and a sweet Thai ginger sauce for dipping
    • Fresh corn on the cob
    • Potato Salad/Chips
    • Green salad

I’m going to do some pork back ribs Korean style. It’s actually something the wifey asked for. But I like them too so I’m OK with that. Some corn on the cob, again a wifey request, and some sort of potato yet to be determined. Maybe some fries or something. 🤷‍♂️
So I’ll be cooking mostly to keep the wife happy but as I said, I’m OK with that. As they say, “Happy wife…..”

+2. Mother's and Father's Days are not happy occasions for me, because I miss my late parents terribly, even though Dad's been gone 22 years and Mom 11. Just doesn't go away.

We had a combined 53rd wedding anniversary and Father’s Day party on Wednesday. Kathy and thought it would just be us two but family from PA were in Rehoboth Beach for the week and asked if they could come by with carryout. Then the local kids joined in. Ended up with 16 family members swimming in the pool, eating carryout pizza, and some pork ribs and sides I cooked.

Luckily I had ordered a case of Maui pineapples several weeks ago to be delivered on our anniversary and everyone made quick work of most of them for dessert. (You haven’t had pineapple until you try a pineapple that was picked field ripe on Monday and delivered to your door on Wednesday.)

Photo of some of the younger members when arriving. Best anniversary present you could give Kathy.

Beautiful. Will get a dog within the next 1-2 yrs. Waiting on the wife to give approval. Been thinking about Corgi's. I'm 66 and probably 67 when I get my dog. Do you recommend a Corgi for an old guy?

Corgis are perfect for older people. They are intelligent, loving, like order and routine, and are easy to train. In fact Tristan on the right, is a champion in obedience and he has basically taught obedience to the two younger ones on his own. They really do need companionship, exercise and activity, but so do we all as we get older, and taking walks and playing with them will keep you young. We just lost one after 16 years, but have spaced the other 3 by age so we will never be without one.

FINALLY picking up something I've been trying to get off FBMP. Apparently I'll only have to travel 18.7 miles to get it.

I was begrudgingly planning on a 3-4 hour round trip by the way things were looking with this item's locations throughout Texas.

Fed Ex delivered my Father’s Day yesterday. Now I have to decide whether to use it as a cutting board or hang it on the wall. I guess if I use it as a cutting board, I’ll break it in on Sunday.

I’ve used baharat on chicken and seafood. I never thought to try it on beef. Looking forward to your report on this cook.

St. Louis Ribs, Mexican Street Corn, Slaw and Cheesecake for dessert. I am the cook. In most cases I would rather cook than go to a restaurant, so I get your plan.

My wife told me that my job was to sit on my arse and watch her cook for a change. So I guess that is what I am going to do!

I haven't thought about it till now. My son is in Vermont and my daughter and family heading to Rhode Island for a weekend soccer tournament for the 15 and 13 year old boys. I have to eat so I'll cook something.

I hear ya. I didnt think about it either until my wife and kids started up with, "what do you want for fathers day" . I'm the same way with my birthday. If I wasn't reminded by the family, the day would go by without a thought.

My son just graduated from his Masters of Science in Quantitative Financial Analytics and will be home Sunday evening. He’s requested Philly Cheesesteaks. Maybe a little bit of lake time prior.

My wife’s family has a tradition where when it’s “your day” you don’t do anything - shop, prep, cook, clean, nothing but relax and enjoy your day. You have to fight to even pour your own drink. That’s applied to birthdays, Mother’s Day - where the men cook, and Father’s Day - where the women cook.

When my wife and I first got married I went along with it. Once we had kids and FD became my holiday too I started to protest. They just want us to relax and eat whatever great food we want them to make.

The problem: they can’t cook the great food I want to eat, only I can! So I started cooking on FD and the new tradition has been accepted.

HOWEVER…this year there will be no such fanfare for me. I got shingles earlier this week (because I’m apparently 80 years old 🤦🏽) and I’m still contagious. So I’ll be spending FD home alone quarantining while my wife takes our kids to their grandparents house…after my boys play multiple games in the Father’s Day baseball tournaments they’re in…which I’m also missing.
