- If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
I would say my single greatest BBQ moment came at a family reunion for my wife's father, more than 20 years ago. I would say about 2000 to 2002. One of my wife's cousin's had made ribs for the reunion that were the best thing I had ever had - first ever Memphis style ribs I had ever tasted to be honest. He told me how he made them, and that he used seasoning he bought by the case at the Rendezvous in Memphis. Before we left Trussville that day to drive back to Birmingham, he had gone back to his house and come back with two unopened bottles of Rendezvous Rub for me, and it started me on a quest to perfect ribs on my trusty offset.
A second thing that happened a few months later that same year was some good BBQ at a Christmas party, and the host showed me his copy of The Barbecue Bible by Steven Raichlen. I made sure my wife got me a copy that same year!
While the Amazing Ribs in 2016 and the Pitmaster Club in 2017 helped improve my outdoor (and indoor) cooking, I say that year, in the 2000 - 2002 time frame, is when my journey to better BBQ started.
